    Greetings from Gettysburg.

If you are interested in shooting black powder firearms from the era of the American Civil War, you are not far from the home range of the North-South Skirmish Association, which is located in Winchester, Virginia! They have spring and fall national events held there, as well as numerous...

    Getting the patent breech clean

Be aware that frequently the Pedersoli touch hole liner intrudes into the chamber and thus will block any implement you try to get down into the patent breech to clean it. On my Pedersoli Pennsylvania I pulled the liner and ground it down until it no longer intruded into the chamber.

Flintlock or percussion for a first purchase?

A percussion gun will give you a LOT less problems.

    Schutzen 3F thoughts

I found Scheutzen to burn dirtier than Goex in a muzzle loader. I once bought some Scheutzen when Goex was unavailable. Was trying to do a load workup with the Moose Wilkinson bullet, which has very little lube carrying capability. Almost gave up on the bullet as it got crunchy to load after...

How long does 1’000 caps last for an average shooter

Snapping caps is a pretty reliable way to clear the fire channel. This is the way N-SSA competition shooters have been doing it for years. I recommend a minimum of 2, 3 is better, to make sure the fire channel is clear. You will know you have a clear channel when you snap a cap at some grass...

what is the correct projectile size for a .36 cal colt 1851?

This fellow shows pretty conclusively how undersize balls can cause chain fires: It's important when loading a percussion revolver that the bullets be slightly oversize to the chambers. Usually a small ring of lead will be shaved on loading, but sometimes, especially if the chambers have...

    Stripping a Buttstock Finish?

I second Citristrip. When it has done all it can do, I then switch to acetone with a rag.

    Tumbling balls in soapy water

The white powder is lead oxide. Washing them is just going to expose fresh lead to oxidize all over again. Store them in a peanut butter jar in a cool, air conditioned environment and they shouldn't oxidize.

    Keeping Minie in Barrel

A well-lubed expanding ball tapped firmly onto the powder should not go anywhere. If you really want to be sure use a paper-patched expanding ball, like the British style of cartridge. Even when they massively undersized their bullets down to .550" (naked size; paper was on top of this) they...

$30 For Remington #10s The New Normal?

Nice thing about ordering from Bass Pro / Cabela's is if you order in-store pickup there is no shipping and no hazmat.

$30 For Remington #10s The New Normal?

Grafs has pistol caps for about $.15 a cap, with shipping and hazmat included, if you buy a brick of 2500. This is about the going commercial rate. Musket caps are about $.18 each. The problem is availability. RWS Dynamite Nobel has stopped shipping to the USA. The division of MAXAM that...

    Storing rifles prior to shooting?

When I pull my guns out of my RV at a skirmish they are often cold and condensation forms on them. AC works nice in the RV and our summers are hot and humid.

    Alpha gal strikes again!

Yup. I had Alpha Gal about 3 years ago. Unexplained hives/rash every morning I'd wake up. Finally went to allergist and I tested positive for Alpha Gal. Burned out for me after 2.5 years.
