    Muzzle-Loaders.Com

Today I ordered a 1842 Springfield smoothbore musket from muzzle-loaders.com. Luckily, I did a phone order and spoke to a guy named Brandon. I expressed to him my concerns that I have with Chiapappa/Traditions’ firearms. There are some “not so great” reviews on the web. He said that he will...

    24 Uberti 1862 Police unpack

I got a Uberti 1862 police from Midway last week for $299. It was a little rough for the first 30 rbs. After a good cleaning, the last 20 rbs were fine. I ordered some Slixshot nipples and a second main spring to clear up any cap jams. The box was even in good shape.

    Small caliber smoothbore?

The thin card shields the fiber wad from disintegrating from the explosion of the bp. Can I prove this, no, but I have been doing it this way for years and I get good shot patterns.

    Cap jam

True, but for the money, what can you expect?

    Cap jam

Rugers are a modern invention, Pietta’s and Uberti’s are copy’s of revolvers made in the 19th century.

    Small caliber smoothbore?

If I am shooting a patched rb, I load 70grs of 3f GOEX. For shot loads, I knock it down to 50grs with an equal amount of #7 or 8 shot using the powder measure. I don’t use the heavy nitro cards, they blow a hole in the shot pattern. Instead I use the thin over shot white card under and over a...

    Small caliber smoothbore?

I have a 28 gauge/54 cal smooth rifle. I believe that the smaller bore smoothies shoot very accurately out to 50 yards. I never shot a 45 cal smoothbore but I would bet that it could keep up with a rifle with the right load up to 50 yards.

    Smoothbore Matches

My club in NE PA tried to have a smoothbore match and sadly there was no interest in it. I feel that smoothbores were the common man’s guns and your 18th century persona would be more believable with one.

    Shooting sticks

Last year my club sanctioned cross sticks for the paper shoot, but you have to be 65 or older. I easily made that requirement and I borrowed a pair of sticks. Honestly, I felt like I was cheating! I won the cross stick match. This year, in September, I plan on having my own set.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Mailman delivered my new Uberti 1862 Police today. I shot 30 rbs through it, action was a little rough. I broke it down and cleaned it and gave it a bath in ballistol and now it is smoothing up nicely.

    'Bone Hardening' your ramrod

I always tell new bp shooters that the great thing about this hobby is that you can do things in many different ways to achieve the result. There really isn’t a wrong way as long as you use Safety first and last.

    Whom Used a Frizzen Stall?

I was as the Ft Fredrick Rondy in Maryland and they required a hammer stall at the range. I didn’t have one with me so they would not let me shoot. I improvised by using a Lally House medicine bag as a hammer stall. I told the range officer that he will never see a more expensive hammer...
