    Loading from the pouch?

One other experience using a wood ramrod with short strokes. Don’t get too rambunctious with those strokes. That ramrod can pinch your hand in the muzzle when loading so I’ve been told by someone. It hasn’t happened to me of course.

    Barrel browning or bluing services?

I put together a TC Hawken kit 40+ years ago. I had the barrel blued because the factory guns were blued. It has since developed a nice patina brown/blue color along with worn spots from years of handling and use. I had the barrel draw filed and polished to a pretty smooth finish before it went...

    Caddyshack III: Judgement Day

As a kid we would take a 5 gallon bucket of water and pour down the hole to drive them out and try to get them with a stick. The rat terrier was more successful than we were.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Went to a local gun show and picked up a Armi Sport 1861 Springfield repro along with other items. The rifle looks like it has barely been fired and it has a very nice walnut stock. The only downside is no front sight. It doesn’t look like it had one or was knocked off and the barrel really...

Need help with old double barreled gun identification

I can’t provide much information but looking at the photo of the muzzle I suspect you have a shotgun unless there is evidence of rifling inside the barrels. The only other thing is the stag carving would slso hint at a Germanic origin unless it was added after the gun was purchased.

Good luck Ed with the eye. I’m sure you’re glad it is over. In a few days it will be: Look out squirrels.

    Where To Find BP Supplies

In Kansas some Walmarts and local gun shops carry minimal black powder supplies. For real black powder your best option is to order powder from on of the reliable venders that ship such as Grafs or Powder Inc. caps are a hit or miss proposition but Cabelas and Bass Pro often have them.

Has anyone tried to make Wedge keys for barrels?

I too made a key for a cheap Ardessa rifle I picked up at a pawn shop. I too just cut some scrap steel to width and clamped it in the vise and had at it with the ball peen hammer. I’d show a picture but the rifle is at my daughter’s.

Need to get rust out of my bore

I like the scotch brite soaked with pb blaster to loosen rust. Obviously it won’t take out a deep pit.

How to clean out lead contaminated(?) cast iron

I would not knowingly use a cast iron pan that had been used for casting but that’s just me. The effects of lead poisoning are suptle and are especially dangerous to infants and children.

    Cannon American Eagle Safe Failed

I don’t have any illusions about my cheapie safe but it will impede the grab and go folks or kids and others easy access.

When is your surgery? Good luck with it. I think you will be amazed at how things improve. Have you told the doc you hunt and shoot. It may make a difference in what implants they use. Maybe not but it’s good information for them to have.

    2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........

I live in town. We’ve had many squirrels this summer but far fewer now. This morning there were a couple in and out of the oak tree in the yard but when I walked the dog around lunch time none to be seen although I heard one. That is very different from earlier this summer. Many must have moved on.

Maybe it’s a case of after eating beef every day ham tastes better for a time or two.

    Managing Wildlife

Tomatobodhi, that is a great explanation. One thing that now greatly changes animal populations now and hunting opportunities is human changes to the landscape. I’ve seen this in the rural area where I grew up. Farming practices have changed dramatically with most pastures and wood rows being...

    Old Remington percussion caps

Yes and $5 a hour was a good wage.

    Old Remington percussion caps

I also had some where the innards fell out on some. They would usually work if put back into an empty cap. I used them for plinking.

    I Found Caps!!

They look similar to the CVA caps that came in a blue plastic container. They both likely came from the same manufacturer. I still have some from the 70s. They seem to work although occasionally I get a weak one.

    Calibre questions

We need to think of the 32 as the 22 long rifle of muzzle loaders. They are great for small game at reasonable distances and a blast to shoot. You don’t take a larger center fire rifle to a 22 sillhoette or a 22lr to win at a center fire long distance match. If you are going to own only one...
