New to BP with a 10 gauge and hopes of a turkey

Someone did a really nice job building the shotgun. It’s a beauty.

Thoughts on this touch hole placement

If you’re getting flash in the pan but not igniting of the charge it is likely other issues.

    Pyrodex?

I measure both BP and Pyrodex by volume. Some suggest you can use less Pyrodex but I just use the same amount. It so slightly less weight per pound than black powder so a pound of pyrodex may give a few more shots.

    Pyrodex?

I used pyrodex when it first came out and have used it off and on since then. My revolver and old T/C Hawken seem no worse from it after 40 years other than normal wear and tear. I still prefer black but if I find pyro cheap or end up with it in a trade I shoot it up. Just keep it in a sealed...

    Pedersoli 12ga nipple sizes??

Check with Track of the Wolf. They are good about knowing what fits what.

    Stock Workers?

A skilled shotgun smith should be able to do it. If you don’t have a muzzleloading smith close by, check with a trap range for someone who does that kind of work or a gun shop that caters to trap/skeet.

    Rifle vs. Smoothbore

Most rifles will consistently group smaller than a pie plate at 100 yards without a great deal of work. A good smooth bore can but it won’t be as easy.

What mistakes have you noticed in movies/tv shows that happen in the BP era like Daniel Boone, Patriot etc?

I have a powder horn from my family who immigrated in the 1870s. It still had powder in it when I got it as a kid. I have no idea what gun they used it with. I suspect a smooth bore. They settled in Nebraska after Indian threats were mostly gone. They had very little money so whatever gun it had...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

If someone found this site they can probably find one of several others that do discuss making black powder.

Help removing Nipples on an 1858 Remington!

I put the cylinder on a couple of short wooden dowels clamped in the drill press vice. You can either tilt the dowels or the press platform so you get a straight shot the nipple. That way both hands are free.

Help removing Nipples on an 1858 Remington!

Take the cylinder out and use a couple of dowels that fit in the chambers and mount the dowels on a vice. Use your homemade nipple wrench that Bud described and put strong pressure down on the wrench while you try to loosen the nipples. I’ve also had good luck mounting the socket in a drill...

    CVA Flintlock ignition issues

I’ve not had trouble getting a small jag into my Shenandoah.

    CVA Flintlock ignition issues

Cleaning the breech without getting into the smaller antichamber will not likely help much. A small caliber jag such as .22 may work to clean it.

    Making Percussion Caps

What are some examples of common single based smokeless powder? I do some limited reloading but never really paid attention.

    How loud?

Wear hearing protection. Now having said that, my 32 Deerhunter is not real loud with a small charge12-15 grains. With 30-40 grain charge it cracks pretty good. It has a short barrel. I imagine something with a long barrel would not be as loud for the shooter.

    Ultra thin patches?

Go to JoAnns and buy some silk fabric. Then your velocity will go way up just like in The Last of the Mohicans movie. I haven’t tried it but since it was in a movie it must be true. Seriously, silk is quite thin but I don’t know how it would hold up to the heat of the powder. You might be able...

    Might have a ball stuck...

The one caveat is if it had the Traditions/CVA type breech plug your ramrod won’t go to the touch hole even if unloaded. I did the same as undertow when I first got my Traditions flinter. I even tried to pull the ball but couldn’t get the screw to bite. Only when I got home did I realize the...

    Iron skeleton stock .45
