    Finishing a Kibler Walnut Stock

I’m just finishing up a Kibler SMR in walnut. The stock had nice figuring so I decided not to use any stain. After a thorough sanding I applied 2 coats of BC sealer/filler using green scotchbrite, wiping off the excess each coat, and 600-800 grit sandpaper after each coat was dry. Then today I...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Finished the stock on the SMR. 2 coats of sealer/filler and 2 coats of oil varnish/turpentine mix. Installed the furniture. I’m pleased with the walnut overall but the ram rod stain I used is terrible. I’ll wait till I finish the barrel to decide on a different shade. And, of course, I banged...

    Good little vise.

It was when new. Hated the color, painted it grey. It’s happier now.

    Good little vise.

I have one of those on my bench. Added it a couple of years ago. I glued leather pads to both sets of grips. Been very happy with it.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Finished sanding the SMR stock. Wiped it down good and applied the first coat of BC sealer filler. Massaged it in with green scotchbrite and wiped off the excess. I’ll put at least one more coat on. No stain on this one, the walnut is nice as is. I’ll finish it with my oil varnish/gum turpentine...

    Flints Back IN Stock

Agree. While I seldom use it, I have one of the inexpensive HF wet tile saws with a diamond blade. Originally bought it to cut agates for polishing, but it does a great job reshaping flints and no dust. Still have to wear eye protection even though it throws everything away from you. I think...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Couldn’t stand the parts just lying there so I reassembled the lock. Up close you can still see the polish. But please look past my extremely crude attempt to star the **** screw. My hands just aren’t steady enough now.

Does seem like a waste doesn’t it. Oh well….

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Got all the SMR metal, except the barrel, blued with Jax Black. Took the easier way out doing that, but I did put a much darker finish on the parts than I have in the past. Probably can’t tell from the photos, but I was able to get similar shades on everything.

Kinda sorta polished out the SMR butt plate. Best I could do on a cast plate. Guess I may have developed a polishing fetish since it really serves no practical purpose.

Started sanding the SMR stock and cut the only incised lines that I’ll do. Guess that’s why I like SMRs, the least you do the better.

    Price of flints going up

I’m fairly well stocked with flints but wish I’d bought more now.

    Birchwood Caseys Perma Blue

I use it and like it. Must be prepped properly as said. Larger surfaces like barrels require multiple coats and draw backs.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Oh yes! I’ve gotten fairly decent at polishing. It’s everything else that’s hard to pull together. And I have heard you say, maybe once or twice, that you hate metal work!!!! But you know it’s funny how we do have things on builds that we really don’t like. For me, it’s slotting lug holes. As...

Opinions about Jonathan Browning Mountain Rifle

As said, main spring is the weak link in an otherwise nice rifle.
