    English lock build

I was advised by a wood worker to soak the ash stock in warm water for several hours. According to him, it will soften the outer layers to make it more workable and “shouldn’t” cause any warping or twisting.

    English lock build

I've been inletting an ash stock and find it's damn hard. Cut by power company linemen on the edge of my property about 5 years ago. I slabbed it immediately and let it air dry, cut it in to a rough blank last summer. It's chippy and brittle, hard to work with. My lock inlet got messed up...

    Wheel weight lead question

I mix WW and pure lead 50/50 for my unmentionable rounds. Have about 350lbs of sheet lead from an X-ray room. Generally go with pure lead for round balls, cuz I have enough to keep me for a while. I wouldn't worry about using straight WW for round balls if I had enough of a supply, just...

    You call that a rifle.

Might as well try a buckshot load of 50cal round balls. Just for sh** and giggles.

    Piebald Doe

Old army depot in western NY State, in the finger lakes area, is loaded with albino deer. All fenced in so they're a captive audience. At least it was the last time I was out here a few years ago.

    Piebald Doe

Isn't piebald just a variation of albinism? Sort of albino light.

    Piebald Doe

I'd love to see an animal biologist weigh in here. I suspect (can't prove) that much of the above would be in the category of "I heard" or "someone told me" etc. Just like "once a spike, always a spike," or "don't shoot does, you'll destroy your herd" type statements. Piebald, like albino, is...

Help ID + Condition Please - Pedersoli Rifle

By the time you ship it and get it worked on and shipped back, your a good $200 in to the gun for a reline or re rifle. Going to smoothbore is a little cheaper...just depends on what you're looking for and how much you want to spend. If it were me, I'd clean it first, as suggested above. It...

Help identifying this half stock plains Hawkins style 60cal?

I would not be in a rush to sell it for $400. Let some people see this post, maybe post more pics, look for identifying marks, and pics of the bore.

    Stock dyeing and finishing questions

I've only experimented once with leather dye on wood. It bleeds quickly and kind of fans out, on cva or traditions wood. European birch or beech or whatever it is. If you stain it first, it doesn't bleed. Might want to practice on something first just to get an idea of how the dye is going...

Custom cut barrel channels and stock blanks

Just got mine back. Great work, and extremely quick turn around. I barely had time to get home after dropping it at UPS, and it was headed back to me.

How you know that you have a keeper.

Mine would have that thing in the kitchen determined to figure out how to use that funky spice measure.

    Carrying a pistol

Very true. I was referring to Bigfoots state.

    Carrying a pistol

Even with a pistol permit, I don't think you can have a centerfire pistol on you during bow or muzzleloading season, per DEC regs.

What's the purpose of this screw on my TC flintlock

Not really concerned, just haven’t seen a scope base of that length. Seems to be a very odd design, if that rear threaded hole is for a scope base.

What's the purpose of this screw on my TC flintlock

I get that it’s a plug and not an actual screw for a scope base. But, I’m having a hard time picturing a base 10 or 12 inches long to span the gap from that hole, to the holes under the rear site base. Anybody got a measurement on that distance, or a photo? Better yet, one of those scope bases.

What's the purpose of this screw on my TC flintlock

Although we can't see the gap between the screw in question in the OP's original post, I suspect that the distance between that screw and the rear sight screws is pretty large. Indicating that the screw he pointed out isn't a scope base screw.
