If it reassures you mine was treated quite poorly at some point and the bore is pretty rough...... Shoots what it shoots great but it is a pain to clean. Real black helps though. I don't care what anyone says pyrodex is way more corrosive than real black. Got to clean that for 3-4 days to get it...

    lube

50/50 olive oil beeswax ratio may varey depending on how it sets up. Seems not all olive oil and beeswax ends up the exact same consistency for some reason..... Who knows maybe I can't measure lol

I've got one of those rifles. It's deadly accurate with the 360gr. Lee Minnie but I can't get it to shoot a ball for nothin lol 80-100grs ffg under the Minnie and it will put them in a half inch at 50 yards though. Just about hurts me more than the deer lol those rifles are tiny.

    Caliber choice for first rifle

What is your main use going to be and what are your local regs like? A .45 is a good all around gun especially for a focus on smallish whitetails. It is a little much for squirrels but not bad on other small game. I'm a fan of big bores and a .54 is going to be the best balance of power and...

Wanting to get a smoothbore flintlock

If I was getting a dedicated gun for shot I would go pretty big 10 gauge would not be out of the question if turkeys or waterfowl were a likely target or even pheasants and such. A 10 gauge can be loaded pretty light or pretty heavy and will cover every base you could want covered. If you...

58 Kibler colonial smoothbore lets see them

Thinking 90 grs ffg goex is going to be the ticket. Bottom 3 shots was 80 grs with prb at 50 yards and top 3 we're 90 grs everything else the same. If I remember right it's a .015 ticking with .562 ball and 50/50 beeswax/olive oil with the patch basically just pressed against the lube firmly...

58 Kibler colonial smoothbore lets see them

It sure is. Ended up being a much nicer piece of wood than I expected. I just finished it with plain old linseed oil. Figured it was plenty authentic that way and would pick up color on its own.

    Looking into my first muzzleloader

Sounds like a smoothbore would be the best first option if you were only going to buy one. Better quality guns with good locks will have a much shorter learning curve. That way you just have to learn and not fight the lock. Were you looking for a kit or a finished firearm? .50 cal stuff is...

    HELP!

Probably not going to get the help you want here...... Perhaps ask for help on a liberal Facebook page or perhaps a tacticool forum lol

    Extremely frustrated

What kind of balls are you shooting? A poor run of balls could definitely make everything else pointless. If you haven't them I would weigh them and toss everything more than 1 grain lighter than the heaviest ball for the 50 or .5 grain lighter for the 40.aybe you've done this and usually you...

    Sharpen Flint?

Usually pressure flake myself. I've got a little brass rod with a notch I filed on the end and a loop bent on the other (for a lanyard or what not) it's actually very simple and I almost never change a flint until it starts getting real short.

    Can't see sights

I was always taught to focus on the front sight. I can see the blurry rear just well enough to be sure the front is in the notch. In fact I can't really recall paying much attention at all to the rear since your eye wants to center the blade and level it up instinctively. Peeps are great if you...

    Terrible accuracy ?!

Usually tight shoots pretty good up to the point of using a mallet ..... I have a .50 that shoots one ragged hole with Conicals at 50 yards. Can't do better than 8+ inches with a ball at 50 no matter what I do. Tight or loose large charge or small charge doesn't matter. Sometimes that's just the...

How do you clean your rifled barrel?

I've had similar experience with bore butter. Same with a few other things I would mainly consider "patch lube" type concoctions..... I have settled on barricade. Haven't had any issue with rust at all. Experience has shown me that a good rust preventative is almost more important than a really...

    The Mountain Men movie

You bumped this all the way up into new posts and now I gotta go watch it.... Got to be in to work at 7pm tomorrow for the ol 12 hour day and everyone here is asleep. So mountain men and gun work it is!

Shooting 45 cal ball in a 50 cal muzzleloader

Just to let you know you won't gain anything shooting a .45 ball. Probably won't gain any velocity and even if you do faster round balls just shed speed faster. It certainly will not out perform a .50 ball. That said if you happen around Ross county ohio I'll give you some .490s to get you...

    Fg Powder in .50 flintlock

I'd try the 1f without the kicker first personally. If I had to use 4f I think I'd stay at 5 grs 10 at absolute most. If everything is good and the lock sparks good it should really light 1f in the pan..... This is provided it's not a sub of course. For 1 f in a .50 I'd start at 70 grs and see...

What caliber is your gun? If it's a bigger bore the fg may work just fine. Black is pretty forgiving in everything except the availability and fouling departments..... I wouldn't try fg in my .32 but I would dump it in a .50 if that's all I had.

How do you clean your rifled barrel?

Always heard petroleum products and black powder fouling don't mix very well..... Can't say myself I've never done it.

    Shooting Conicals

Really you don't need 90 grs for effect on target. Not even for the lighter balls. In one of my guns a 360 .50 minie and 100 grs ffg shoot one hole at 50 yards but I think it hits me harder than the deer...... You start getting projectiles over 350 grs you don't really need velocity for anything...
