    My flintlock turkey tale

Flintlock turkey AND morels? That's a fine day to be sure. Congratulations.

Flintlock or Percussion shooting .... Which is easier?

"Languish" - I love it, lol... To answer the OP's question, I think clearly percussion rifles are easier. I would also say that "easier" may not be the best word choice. I think flintlocks are easy - now... But it took me a while to learn how to manage and feed them. The learning curve is much...

    One I’ll remember

Very nice. Yep, taking a bird with a flintlock makes a special memory. Congratulations.

What got you interested in flintlocks?

I wanted a Jaeger is a big reason. I wanted the challenge of a flintlock - it forces you to be a marksman. I have and shoot a 21 century precision rifle wondergun that will pile bullets on a 10" plate at 700 yards. In my opinion it takes as much or more skill to pile those .62 caliber round...

    New Turkey Hunter

“I froze in awe”. That punctuates the thrill of hunting. A successful hunt doesn’t require a kill. What a great story. Thanks for sharing it. Thanks for being the kind of friend to introduce someone to hunting that way.

    Rear Sight Preference

I prefer a blade front sight with a square rear notch and a fair bit of light on both sides. If a gun has a v notch rear sight I want a bead front sight. My younger eyes could handle the bead/v-notch combo better than they can now.

    Shoulder Tension

@Nuthatch Congratulations on your willingness to look at yourself for ways to improve accuracy. With either you or the rifle, consistency is the key to accuracy. Firm hold or light - attempt to achieve consistency. I pull the rifle “snugly” into my shoulder. I have no clue how to quantify that...

    First Flintlock Tom

Congratulations on your success. That's a really nice bird. Taking a spring turkey with a primitive gun is a real hoot.

Curious, How do you clean your Pinned barrel Rifle or Smooth bore?

I remove the lock, then instead of sealing the touch hole with a toothpick I seal the touch hole using a rare earth magnet. I use a small scrap of leather as a gasket over the touch hole and seal it using a strong rare earth magnet. I sometimes "sprung a leak" with toothpicks, but I don't using...

    Turkey Hunting with round ball

I agree up close is exciting. I shot my turkey this year from 36 feet away with my .40. Not upset by the way; I just maintain that the gun used is a matter of choice and familiarity. My shotgun is a caplock. I wanted to use my flintlock. Here in Texas both rifles and shotguns are legal. I've...

One Or Two Bores For Everything?

I’ve settled on a .62 Jaeger and a .40 longrifle - both flintlock. I’m happy. I have other guns but they don’t see much daylight.

    Before the hunt...

To all of you that served, thank you for your service. @Daryl Crawford As I put in my thread there is nothing quite like spring turkey season. You are correct in that the longer I hunt, the less I worry about the actual act of taking the bird. I have been lucky to hunt with my son the last few...

    Spring Turkey Flintlock Style

Spring turkey season is always special. The grass is green and wildflowers are in bloom. The weather is moderate to warm. And gobblers are chasing hens - drumming, strutting, and gobbling. A bad spring turkey hunt is a good day in the woods. A good hunt makes a memory for a lifetime. The season...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

A posted a while back that I bought an unmentionable - and waxed my Jaeger in apology. This was my first unmentionable purchase in probably 25 years. Well, it turns out I had to return the 21st century wonder gun to the factory due to issues. So - I'll still be carrying my 18th century...
