Starting my winter pistol build early

Your comment is very kind. But honestly, I'm just an amateur at best.

Starting my winter pistol build early

So, today was spent (and spent I am) final shaping the lock plate, then doing the critical (critical to me) drilling of the lock plate holes and mounting to the pistol. Remember, this lock plate started out as a piece of sheet brass. Now, this came out great (for me) and I still need to do a...

    Barrel lug

From what I see here: https://korns.org/gunsmiths/Eli-Nup-9292024/Eli-Nup-9292024.html it states the RR pipes are pinned in.

UPS has outdone itself. I'm actually impressed by how massive of a failure this is, even Kiblers famous crates are no match! INSURE YOUR STUFF FOLKS!

Post your outcome with insurance. I know several years ago when the USPS was "really bad" my wife had an order come for a clay vase. It came in the box.....and in pieces. We filed a claim with the USPS insurance and it just got lost in the vortex. We contacted them so many times it was silly...

    Need help tuning lock

In giving this a little more thought, you may also want to remove a small amount of material on the frizzen where I have the arrow pointed. Again, don't overdo this. Keep the surface on the back flat and even. Since that is the part of the frizzen that's rebounding from the spring a little...

    Need help tuning lock

Your frizzen should not be bouncing back against the flint. If you have a trigger pull measurement tool, or even a fishing weight device, measure the poundage of what it takes to open your frizzen. Measure from the top of the frizzen. I've done this on 4 of my flintlocks and get the following...

    Pedersoli to CoS conversion

That lock cleaned up very nice! Good work. I'm looking at the front, and it's likely just different lighting, but I can see a gap between the frizzen spring and the front of the lock. Was it that way before or is it just nice and shiny now and noticeable?

Began working on the side plate. .800 thick brass sheet. Cut out the pattern on paper, glued it to the sheet brass, drilled a bunch of holes around the pattern, then hack sawed through the web. Lots of filing still yet to do, but it will get there.

Has anyone tried to make Wedge keys for barrels?

SHOWOFF!! Where was this post when I was installing my wedge keys? :ghostly:

Has anyone tried to make Wedge keys for barrels?

I took this image (second pic) from TOTW. If you make one, or even acquire one, you may wish to consider drilling\filing this type of retention slot. Then, inside of your stocks barrel channel, drill a vertical hole and insert a pin through the wedge key's slot. Make the pin flush or just...

Converting to half-stock. Worth it for historical value?

Well, frankly, and not to be a negative Nancy, what's the point? Those who watch the reenactments likely have no idea of the difference, and couldn't tell a T\C Hawken from a replica (fill in the blank here). IMHO, if you're going to take time to build a flintlock, then build a flintlock. Do...

Has anyone tried to make Wedge keys for barrels?

$12 for the wedge key, then another $8 for shipping. Now you have $20 wrapped up in a chunk of brass or steel that's smaller than your pinky!!!

Starting my winter pistol build early

Well, since I made my mistake of not taking the bottom wood down to the right distance, after I corrected that.... my trigger plate hole is off. Because the tang bolt is at a slight angle, when I removed another .150 of wood, the proper hole location needed changed. I tried a few work arounds...

    TC Patriot loading stand ?

I don't have a T\C pistol, but I have my self-built pistol. I made my own loading stand for it. Prior to the stand I just held it under my arm when ramming the PRB down the bore for fear of cracking the wrist. But I made a loading stand for it. I don't have pics but it's similar to the T\C...

    Rust protection.

I would never use Bore Butter for long term or even short term protection. You have a modern steel barrel. Use modern steel protection for it.

Starting my winter pistol build early

Thank you for your very kind words. I haven't built a lot, only 3 rifles and one pistol.....and hours and hours of reading build books and on line research. I'm still very much an amateur. This will be just a target pistol for me. Here in PA to hunt deer with a pistol the minimum caliber is...
