Adding a rear sight to my fowling piece.

It can’t be any lower than using my tang screw.. lol. I would still be using that method if my eyes would cooperate, but alas at the ripe old age of 51 my rear sight is getting blurry. I think the bi focals had a lot to do with the blurriness, if I take the glasses off, then front sight is...

Adding a rear sight to my fowling piece.

There isn’t any bluing really, it’s a Jackie brown Fowler, he ages the steel somehow. However I am going to dovetail it in so I can adjust it accordingly. I made the rear sight out of brass, I’ll be dovetailing it in hopefully Thursday.

Powder Horn #2 and #3 Experiment Engraving

Oh wow! Did you use an air graver? Or by hand?

Powder Horn #2 and #3 Experiment Engraving

Looks GREAT! I’very done a little scrimshaw, but I find it hard on my hands, mainly my fingers. I also like your brass attachment rings. Your horn all in all was very well executed.

Adding a rear sight to my fowling piece.

That’s a good idea, however I’ll need mine down towards the muzzle more, most likely around 10 inches from the breech. I’ll test it all out first. I might solder it or I might dovetail it, I havnt decided yet.

Adding a rear sight to my fowling piece.

I mighy have some brass stock to make one. Did you make that one? I had originally asked for measurements.. but I actually won’t need them.

Adding a rear sight to my fowling piece.

I like that, but it seems awfully high, I could file it down some I spose. I might have to get ahold of Clay Smith and see about one.

By the way, it’s an octagon to round barrel

Adding a rear sight to my fowling piece.

I have been thinking of adding a rear sight to my Fowler. I’m most likely going to order from from Track or muzzloading supply, is there a favorite one that you’ve used? Also would you solder it on or dovetail it? My tang screw has served as a rear sight for years.. my old eyes are needing...

    Horn

I like the coloring, I also like the scrimshaw, just enough to accent the horn but not overwhelming. 👍🏻

    Do you gut your deer?

I always gut, skin and butcher my own deer. I do take some of the meat to my local butcher for snack sticks to be made, I cut my own steaks and make my own jerky other than that.

    Building a Powder Horn

Your scrim looks very nice, just like many of the originals I’ve handled. I also like the color of the horn. Your horn looks a lot better than most for a first attempt. I really like it!
