    Shortened a barrel

Focus on the target and front sight and you will instinctively center the front post. The rear will be a ghost image...do not try to bring it into focus It sounds like you are not placing the front sight at the same spot . It helps to use a pistol bullseye target as the round black circle...

Powder for Longer or Shorter Barrels.

Burn rate can mean different things unless you set parameters on what you are talking about. The surface area of black powder has one "burn rate" and it doesn't matter if it is ON 1F or 4F if you are talking about the same amount of surface area. However, 10 grains of 4F has a much faster...

And I do not. I have validated over 100 different loads for velocity using a chrono and it is spot on

Powder for Longer or Shorter Barrels.

You are correct. I meant that with the fine grades there is more surface area exposed and thus it burns more vigorously.

I have returned from a long stay away.

Welcome home. We all, at some times in our lives, have let our mouth overload our arse. Doesn't make it right, but does make us human. Glad to see you have rectified the situation and can get back to it.

you can use them either way. i get the lubed ones. load powder, bump the butt to settle powder in the flash /breech, insert wad into bore, conical over the top and seat. wads help accuracy, especially with the heavier loads.

I used a stubby pencil and a note pad...just like in the old days of testing aircraft! I recommend the following: Pick a max distance Pick a desired ftlbs of energy at your max distance based upon your game Pick an acceptable level of accuracy at your sight in distance. Mine was 3" or less...

Powder for Longer or Shorter Barrels.

Note the length of the barrels he is talking about using 1 f with. I have fence posts shorter than many of those. Not one of those, unless they were cut in to two, would qualify as a carbine. Also "heavy" 100 grains of 2f in a 62 cal? I am using 110 grains of T7 FFFg in a 54 cal.

Powder for Longer or Shorter Barrels.

It is the grind. More surface area exposed to oxygen and surface to burn. Bore size makes a difference also as there is more room for expansion and thus more complete burn. In short, volume of area to burn, the physical condition of what you are burning. Faster burn mean quicker and higher...

I know there is huge controversy about energy required for game. I use energy for the following reason...penetration. A bullet, if it holds together reasonably well, with enough retained energy will penetrate solid bone and continue on to give through and through penetration so that you will...

My new to me "Bush Buster"

I have found out a couple of things during my development and testing of my carbines: 1. Distance matters. If you are shooting for accuracy at 50 yards, you can shoot at lower velocities which, with most any hollow base conicals, provides the best accuracy. If you want a conical to have...

I had a 24" 1-48 twist CVA Frontier Hunter 54 cal and it liked 375 grain CVA Deerslayers quite well. With heavier (420 deerslayers) it wasn't happy nor was it happier lighter with REALs Try slightly heavier conical and a slightly heavier powder load (faster MV) to spit them out a bit faster...

    Stay In Your Lane!

I had the same thing happen at an unmentionable pistol match. When I pointed it out, he wanted to argue with me. So I shot his targets, rather poorly for him. The next time he made sure the targets were in his lane.

@necchi You are only half right. They know what sells. How it works is a subjective thing.....a framing hammer works great if you use it for its intended purpose. Make your tool fit the job.

@ORBushman Use FFFg powder for your carbine. You need a faster burning powder for the shorter barrel.

Very nice. It will make a fine deer gun I am partial to carbines. I am using ghost ring firesight rear and firesight fronts. Makes it nice for those early morning and dense area sneakers 24", 22", 23", 23"
