    Keeping an 1858 loaded indefinitely

I carry mine on the regular. I can go months at a time and it will still fire when needed. I do use a dry wad between the powder and ball, but it's more for accuracy than anything else.

need help with 44 cal muzzleloaded pistol loading

You would be safe with 25 grains til you learn more. I have an 1858 that I use 20-25 with round ball for plinking, and 30 grains with a cast bullet for hunting or carrying.

Do you display your flintlock or other guns in your home

Only those I truly trust enter my home. Only a very few from my family even know where I live. So most have no clue what I own. If/when I host a family event, it's held in my field at my outdoor saloon. So there is no need for anyone to even be up at the house. And, like you, all are placed to...

Which is historically correct, precut patches or cut at muzzle?

This is just a guess, but I'm sure the methodology was as varied then as it is today. That being said, from what I have seen and read, it seems both methods are historical. However, I believe cutting at the barrel was more common. This would explain the commonality of a patch knife.

    chamber sealant

I had several chain fires with my 1858 when I was developing a hunting load. Here is what I found... I was using a .452 ball to start. Chain fires were regular (maybe 1:50) I moved up to a .454 ball (still developing a load) and noticed a reduction in the number of chain fires (1:100). When I...

    Weight sorting cast lead balls.

I like precision, especially when hunting. As said before, mine are tumbled, then measured to within .001 diameter, then weighed to within 1 gr for over 50 cal, and .5 gr for under. Also for hunting, my powder is weighed. Any oddball bullets are either recast, or used for plinking and practice...

    Modern shotgun barrel conversion

I made some adapters out of some old shells. Found that fired Fiocci shells are hard to remove from my wife's 410 single (had to use a rod from my ml to knock them out after firing). So, I took a few and reamed the primer hole so it just fits snug and I can easily remove fired primers. Then put...

How far does spent patches go ?

At the last meet up we had here on my 50 yd range there were a LOT of patches sent down range. Most fall between the 10 and 20 yd target stands. However, that evening, I did find a few close to the 40.

    1851 navy hunting
