    Goex powder @ Buffalo Arms

I think I got the last two pounds of Goex FF at my local sporting goods store yesterday. Today they were out of FF but had FFF.

    GOEX PLANT

Everything is influenced by politics, especially rising costs due to inflation. Did politics and economic policy play a part in why Goex can't make a profit? Your guess is as good as mine. Even in a great economy there are companies that fail due to poor decision making and other economic...

    GOEX PLANT

$18 a can? I just paid $69 + change today for two pounds of Goex. Your point is well taken about cost but even at $30/pound this is a fraction of the cost of what ammo costs for modern guns. For example, $30 only gets me one box of centerfire rifle ammo or couple rounds of trap. People find...

Poll: Will the closing of Goex dissuade you from buying a Flintlock?

I would venture to say that even with Goex closing, we will still continue to have an easier time sourcing gun powder in the twenty-first century than those who relied on these guns in their heyday two centuries ago.

Boiled linseed oil vs raw linseed oil

Just get some Wahkon Bay Tru-Coat and you'll never worry about anything else again. It is linseed oil based and has some other stuff in it, but land sakes is it good stuff. The experience and smell of rubbing that on a stock once a day for a week and then once a week for a month is a true...

What are these lumps on my stock?

Thanks for all the compliments. It was my first build and I was very happy with it. When I started it I wasn’t even sure I could pull it off. Ended up getting a Judges Choice Award in the first build category at Dixon’s that year. These lumps don’t bother me and in a way they add some natural...

What are these lumps on my stock?

It's definitely not because the wood wasn't seasoned long enough or stabilized; I bought the stock blank in 2009 and didn't finish the build until 2016. Interesting thought about the vice. I was careful not to compress it too tightly and there aren't similar marks on the lock side, but you...

A beginner's problem with a swamped barrel inlet

The best way I have found to do final barrel fitting by hand is with a scraper, such as this one: https://www.muzzleloaderbuilderssupply.com/mbs3cart/agora.cgi?cart_id=9801410.12690&p_id=25585&xm=on They are available in various widths, the wider ones are best for the bottom of the channel and...

What are these lumps on my stock?

Over time, my rifle that I built back in 2016 has been developing lumps on the side plate panel, and tonight I just noticed one on the top of the wrist. I've never seen anything like this before on any other finished hardwood product. It was a red maple blank from Dunlap and the finish was LMF...

    Barrel Finish?

I know a guy who uses chlorox mixed with water to give steel an aged look. He spritzes it on with a spray bottle, lets it work for a little while, then wipes it off. You have to be careful with that though because the bleach will eat steel after not too much time. I once soaked a knife in...

    Thinning LMF Sealer

I have some old LMF Permalyn Sealer in a jar that's gotten thick as honey. Can it be thinned with anything to make it useful again? I plan to use it on some odd jobs around the house like sealing some tool handles, so it doesn't have to be like new or "gunstock grade". Thanks.

    Dixon's Gunmaker's Fair Is Over

I just heard the news today. Very unfortunate. The Judge's Choice Award I received for my first build hangs proudly over my work bench to this day and has been inspiration to someday return with another entry. As popular as the fair was, I can't imagine something else won't be started to...

    Polishing Brass

How many who polish their brass have a browned barrel? If you meticulously polish your brass, you better keep that barrel shined white.

Vise for hammer & chisel engraving

I use an adjustable lamp clamped to the workbench with a blue-white LED light bulb. Light with a higher temperature spectrum (5000K+) is closer to natural light and said to be better for detailed work. But then again, maybe using a candle would be more PC. 😜

Vise for hammer & chisel engraving

That’s not a whole lot different from the vise I mentioned in my original post. The biggest drawback was having to loosen and tighten the thumb screws every time I repositioned the work. That one above would be too low on most workbenches.

Is there a way to convert different powder grains?

Over the years I have accumulated various sizes of blackpowder and have on hand containers of FFFF, FFF, and FF. As some barrel manufacturers like Rice specify to use no smaller than F or FF, I am wondering if there is a way to convert grains of one size to grains of another should I ever find...

Vise for hammer & chisel engraving

Update: Having learned the lesson that you get what you pay for a hundred times over, I figured I'd take a chance and give the relatively inexpensive vise found on Amazon a try. Every once in a while you get lucky. The vice itself was fine, but the rubber base was very soft and did not...
