    My first build inleting question

If this is your first build I highly recommend hand tools for everything. I inlet a swamped barrel into a blank stock using only hand tools for my first build, and I am glad I did. It will take 10 times longer but you will learn 10 times as much, achieve better results, and gain an...

traditionalist - Are we Loosing the Battle

Hunting and fishing and the ways of the outdoors were lost back in the 80s and 90s when people failed to pass that stuff on to their kids. Baby boomers who grew up in they heyday of the 60s and 70s but let your kids play video games when you should have had them out in the woods you know what I...

Holding a patch box while engraving

John Schippers book says that he does not remove the inlays and patch box from the stock for engraving, but I plan to remove the patch box from my finished rifle for engraving because I don't have room in my shop to work around the entire rifle. What's the best way to secure the patch box lid...

    Ballistol Warning

Just to clarify, I am referring to Break Free CLP by Safariland. Lot's of products fit the bill as a CLP (Cleaner, Lubricant, Protectant) including Ballistol.

    Ballistol Warning

You want to avoid petroleum based products around the stock. I use CLP for all my modern guns like Glocks that don't have any wood. But petroleum based oil can damage wood over long term if it gets between the barrel and stock, behind lock and side plate, etc. That's why I like Ballistol...

    Ballistol Warning

Water itself does not cause rust/corrosion. That requires oxygen and an electrolyte. Even though Ballistol emulsifies with water, it somehow either blocks oxygen or prevents water from becoming an electrolyte. I came across a study once where several products gun cleaning products were tested...

Vise for hammer & chisel engraving

Thanks for all the great info here. For the price, I might give the vise on Amazon a shot. It’s 17.5 lbs. Jaw width isn’t as much a concern for me because I usually mount the work on a wood block that is screwed to a piece of angle iron and clamp the other leg of the angle in the vise. Been...

Vise for hammer & chisel engraving

Is there a minimum weight and diameter that works best with H&C? I'm sure the heavier the better, but the heavier the more costly as well.

Vise for hammer & chisel engraving

A couple years ago I started teaching myself to engrave using hammer & chisel, and have been using this inexpensive swivel vise from Harbor Freight. It actually works very well, since it can pivot in two directions, and does not vibrate or move when cutting. However, sometimes the process of...

    Mounting a Flint

I use leather cut from an inexpensive welding apron from Harbor Freight. The leather is very soft and grips the flint well. I’ve also used leather from leather work gloves but find that the softer leather of the apron compresses better and gets a better grip. Never had one come loose yet.

    To .50 or to .54 !?

My first rifle was a Lyman Trade Rifle in 50 cal. Killed many deer with it and shot very well at the range. I then built aN early Lancaster rifle and considered 54 but stayed with 50 because I already had plenty of .490 round balls and jags and at the time I used precut patches and didn’t want...

    Shooting sporting clays with muzzleloader

Do you shoot modern sporting clays with muzzleloader? I would never show up at my local club for 5-stand trap night with muzzleloader because reloading on the line while everyone waits would be an obvious issue, but at the sporting clay course where you go at your own pace it might be possible...

    Another "No" to muzzleloader hunting....

Not sure I follow how the type of gun and ammunition you will be using comes into play. When I ask permission to hunt, it goes something like, "Hi, would you mind if I were to hunt <game species> on your land?..." The type of firearm and ammunition I might use is my methods and means and has...

    Rust bluing ?

Last year I used a mixture of water and bleach to clean one of my favorite carbon steel hunting knives, and the bleach resulted in major pitting and corrosion. So much that I had to grind the blade down and refinish it. I would not want that anywhere near my gun barrel. If you must use...

20 vs. 12 gauge for hunting

Spence, the "knuckleball" effect, as you call it, is not a function of distance traveled. That zig-zag behavior is not going to increase as the ball moves further down range, as drop will. It will be doing the same thing at 150 yards that it was doing at 5 yards in this regard. The difference...

    SEEKING: English long gun advice

If the gun has meaning to you, I say go for it. Just manage your expectations. My very first gun was an old Sears Model 200 pump shotgun I bought used for less than $70 when I was in high school to go dove hunting with my best friend and his dad. It was old then and it's even older now and...

20 vs. 12 gauge for hunting

Guys there are a lot of variables that are hard to account for in the laboratory much less control in the field. The “vortex shedding” of a round ball will still happen even if the ball is deformed a bit, but those deformations (like the sprue) will also disrupt air flow around the ball and...

20 vs. 12 gauge for hunting

Turbulent air flow. Google "vortex shedding" if you want to know more.

20 vs. 12 gauge for hunting

I just realized I used the wrong phrase in post #88 when I said "ballistically efficient". I meant efficient in terms of stability for accuracy, not ballistic coefficient. Sorry for the confusion. BC has to do with overcoming the air resistance and you guys are right about that stuff. The...
