    Getting the patent breech clean

Pull the breechplug and enlarge the cavity. A friend also coned one so that the entrance to the cavity matched the bore. No ledge. Then polished it.

Condemning an old rifle, rather than repairing it.

Turning wrecks into shooters is something to do once, for the satisfaction.

Is There Any Of You Guys That Use Vintage Tools When Building ML.

Drawknife, 3 different spokeshaves, 5 or 6 different planes, hand saws, gimlets, scrapers come to mind first. Of course chisels date to the Bronze Age, so I guess should be included.

    Aqua Fortis

Red maple can go very dark easily with AQF. Sugar maple, less dark and more reddish tones in my experience. Most times a combo of stains like you have planned gives the desired results. Other times I just take whatever the maple stock gives me with AQF.

Don’t do a second coat until you’ve seen the result of the first coat. To see it you must heat after the first coat. Then if you want darker, repeat.

Rehardening frizzens - one size fits all? Musings for metallurgy masterminds....

    1) They are super narrow. Can’t think of many frizzens that narrow. 2) Not all hacksaw blades are simple high carbon steels with predictable, simple heat treating and tempering requirements

    Nose cap refitting?

It’s fine as it is. It doesn’t wobble, right?

Had it been water quenched directly from the forge?

Rehardening frizzens - one size fits all? Musings for metallurgy masterminds....

A couple thousandths are plenty for lock plates and tumblers and sears. Frizzens wear more. When I deep pack case harden I add mild steel tie wire 1/16” thick. After quenching it snaps like glass and so it must penetrate pretty deep.

    Tang screw"s" & torque

I think you are alone in doing this. It’s possible some high end bench shooters do this. Many of us index our tang screw slots to align with the barrel and so keep things pretty consistent.

    This one's pretty but odd

In talking to others more knowledgeable than I am, a New England parts gun using some Dutch parts, stocked in maple. Just what I like. I’ll PM asking for dimensions. I’d love to build one like this.

Very interesting early gun, likely French parts. It would be good to post it on the ALR forum.

Rehardening frizzens - one size fits all? Musings for metallurgy masterminds....

There’s waay too much hardening of frizzens by people with very little experience in hardening and tempering steel and who don’t have much knowledge outside of what they get online. First is assuming the frizzen needs hardening. Not getting sparks? TEST for frizzen hardness before deciding...

I think “neutralizing the effects of salt” might refer to preventing “after rust”?

I am Interested in making muzzle loaders the old way. Need advice how to.

In addition to many skills to master, that took apprentices 7 years of daily work, practice, study, and instruction, anyone taking this on should spend 3-4 years intensively studying originals.
