    Kibler smr ash

I think it looks great. I have a Kibler SMR put together by Jim Kibler, and it is a fine shooting machine.

    Thinking of getting a flinter??

50 balls are the easiest to find, then 54 and 45. Getting 40 balls locally is kinda hard. Of course mail order or casting fixes that. I have 45 and 54. I do like shooting the 45 with 50G 3F the most. Low recoil, and easy on powder.

Was Dutch right about wiping between shots?

I had issues with cleaning between shots. I generally fire 25 rounds a session, and don't need cleaning between rounds. My barrels are lapped, and easy to load and clean. I use simple green + water to clean, and balistrol as a final clean. I don't believe in "oils". Maybe the cleaning and...

    PA 2023 Flintlock season

Saw tracks 1/4 mile from my tree stand in the fresh snow this morning, but never even saw a bird. I guess it snowed a 1/2 inch while I was in the tree stand. Super quiet and relaxing, except for the occasional snow dump from the mountain laurel. I shot off the rifle when I got back to the...

    PA 2023 Flintlock season

It is crazy rain. drizzle, and mist everyday. I took the dog out to mountain trails today, and it was really hard to see 100 yards on a logging road. I guess rain predicted tomorrow and Saturday too. My hunting buddy took the week off to hunt. He is not too happy.

    Kibler SMR mysteries

I think I fixed my trigger. The silver side spring was hanging up on the trigger frame. The trigger frame had a "lip/burr" at the top of the spring travel. The spring would grab and chatter up that lip. Sometimes it would stick. So i lightly filed off the burr and sanded with 1000X wet/dry...

    PA 2023 Flintlock season

Weatherman said rain would hold off until 5PM today for the opening day, so I had all my stuff in the truck last night. Wife woke up early on her day off and made me breakfast. Put on my new Christmas merino long johns under my hunting clothes and headed out to my prime hunting spot. I...

    Ready to Stain! Woodsrunner.

I used two coats of iron nitrate, letting each dry a day, then heated. Used 6 coats Minwax tung oil. Worked great on two Kiblers. If I get a 3rd, that is what I'll do. Really easy.

Double set double phase trigger issues

I have a pretty fair amount of tension on the rear main spring. It is a lot more snappy when I cleaned and lubed everything up. I just shot 20 rounds, and I never has the set trigger issue. So I am pretty confident it was a machining burr on the trigger frame that held up the reset spring...

Double set double phase trigger issues

Since flintlock hunting is a week from today, I figure I should try to file off a bit of the trigger frame. New triggers are 70 bucks, so with hunting approaching is is worth the risk. The spring would catch/drag right at the top of the spring travel. So I took off a burr and did a radius...

Double set double phase trigger issues

While I had it out, I disassembled and cleaned and oiled it up a bit. I think I found the issue maybe?? If I use the front trigger, it compresses the small side wire spring. If I do this the spring hangs up on the front of the trigger frame and never goes completely up to put pressure on the...

Double set double phase trigger issues

I don't have the trigger in the rifle because I expect to return it. When I pull back the **** to firing position, the rear trigger wont move. The rear trigger seems like it has been pulled to the rear, but I never touch it. The front trigger is set in the hair position though. So the rear...

Double set double phase trigger issues

I have it out now, and it operates normally, but when fired, I think it is kinda weak popping up. Naturally the problem is hard to recreate out of the stock, because a key issue is at full **** the rear trigger is not clicking, and the front trigger is already set. So the front trigger sets...

Double set double phase trigger issues

I used this trigger for a bit less than 400 rounds. Now with great frequency the front trigger is "set" without using the rear trigger. If you pull on the rear trigger is does nothing to set the front trigger since it is set. If I lower the ****, and pull it back to fire sometimes it will...

    Kibler SMR mysteries

The williams sight are drilled and tapped in the barrel. I added a Merit adjustable aperture so the peep hole is variable for a crisp sighting picture. The aperture is easy to adjust for light conditions. It closes to almost nothing to huge.

Barrel weights according to Jim Kibler

The woodsrunner I just assembled had metal shavings in the barrel. I was pretty surprised. I felt something when I was measuring the ram rod, and I thought it would be a rag with lapping compound. So I put a worm on a rod and pulled out a bunch of swarth. There was more cuttings, maybe a...

    Kibler SMR mysteries

Disclaimer, I am not a SMR expert, but I have 400+ balls through it. I had the same trigger problem after 350 or so shots.. On a guess, I moved the screw until it did not set, then backed it off some (?) amount of turns. That seemed to fix it. I had no issues since then, maybe 50 rounds...
