What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I've been laid up since last Friday after having a double hernia surgery but today I got down to the shop and was able to get some more of the carving done on Loja Man's Fowler. It felt great to get back to it.

    What's wrong with my layout?

Much better! Does your drawing extend out to the butt plate? Can you post a picture?

    What's wrong with my layout?

The tail of your lock is angled down too low. Ideally it should be centered on the wrist. This is making the wrist too tall which is why you have too much wood below the lock. Correct that line and your triggers will move up. As Crisco said make a full layout on large paper. If the DJ lock...

It was a beautiful fall day here in Kentucky. I set up a table and cast some .395, .440 and .595 round balls.

Finished up draw filing and sanding the barrel, and the trigger guard on Loja Man's Fowler. Did some final wood shaping. I just need to finish up filing and sanding the butt plate then De-Whisker the stock and it's ready to start sketching the carving.

    Flintlock Gunsmithing

You will need a vise with the jaws lined with leather. I cut pieces of veg tanned leather and use carpet tape to stick them in the vise jaws. Get a light fixture that you can move around the gun. Good directional lighting is essential in gun building. Make yourself a stand to hold the gun up. I...

Not today but yesterday I made more progress on Loja Man's Fowler. The thumb piece is almost in. I took a break from inletting and worked on cleaning up the lock parts.

    Fowler kicking my tail

My .62/20g Chambers Fowler didn't do well with a .600 RB with wads/cards or patches and 2F. As soon as I switched to .595 patched RB with 80g of 3f I started hitting the 10x consistently at 25 yards, and getting tighter groups at 50. I used it to shoot the Silhouettes match at nationals. It's a...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Today I drilled and tapped the thumb piece. This was cast by Dave Person. This thumb piece has a "Boss" that is tapped and bolted through the wrist. The bolt is hidden under the trigger guard. I modified a bolt to fit. The bolt is good to go and I have started inletting the piece. Ignore the...

Question for the many builders about lock finish

I've not seen any original guns with the lock left in a rough cast state. The gunsmith or his apprentice would file and polish the parts just as they did for the brass furniture. Modern made locks have that grey investment cast surface. To do the job right that surface needs to be removed.

To do the final stock shaping. The dye just helps so you know where you have scraped and haven't. And Loja Man is right it helps show low spots and rasp marks. You can also use the dye/alcohol when de-wiskering.
