    SOLD North Carolina mountain rifle

Frankie, My guess is the end of the battery acts as a reflector when shining a light in the muzzle. It helps to make the rifling grooves stand out. Often times, a regular bore light dropped in the barrel can "overexpose" or "wash out" the rifling grooves.

    Buying A Used MuzzleLoader.

Polecat, Scots-Irish, so about half Irish. England offered Irish folks free land in neighboring Scotland back in 19th century, so they took the King's offer and moved in. An O'Cahan became a Buchanan.🤔😉

    Need help, what is it?

I believe the grooves are for a barrel wrench that would have accompanied the pistol's owner. Sometimes referred to as "muff pistols", they were carried by women and concealed in their fur muff that kept their hands warm. When the hammer is cocked, the trigger springs out from the frame. Many...

    Ruger Old Army Range Report

You might consider a reduced load, say 20 grains 3 FG black powder, coupled with a cream of wheat filler to place the ball just below the face of the cylinder, then grease on top to soften the fouling in the barrel. If you are going to invest in a taller front sight, have a competent gunsmith...

    1838 Pomeroy Type III

Since your ramrod is 39 & 15/16" in length, the only plausible explanation is that the other 2 & 1/16" original end of your ramrod in still in the ramrod channel at the lock area. I have a Model 1816, Type II, made at Springfield in 1827, and I measured the ramrod, which is threaded for...
