Was Dutch right about wiping between shots?

Did a bit more testing at 50yds today. Gun was a .36cal T/C Hawken with Rice barrel, load was .350rb 30g FFFg and RWS 1075+ . Added Hoppe's black powder to the lineup, and diluted the Dawn/water to 5% instead of 40%. Again, 30+ shots without wiping, and no misfires. Accuracy was decent and...

Was Dutch right about wiping between shots?

Wow, don't think I have ever used a mopp in the bore. I have several, but they're old, and unused. I rarely even use a brush, usually just to remove rust in a recently purchased used gun, and sometimes in my musket after a skirmish, when I fired 7-10 miniballs consecutively without swabbing...

Was Dutch right about wiping between shots?

So much safer and easier to siimply moisten the patch slightly with a liquid cleaning product. Even if it is just saliva or water. I like to use 50/50 simple Green /Alcohol or commercial windshield wiper fluid in a 2oz spray bottle. 1-2 quick sqirts on a patch is all you need. I usually use...

Was Dutch right about wiping between shots?

One of the first warnings I got starting out, was to never to use a dry patch, because they get stuck and may come off in the bore. Dutch Schultz's dry patch system, isn't truly dry, Oils are left behind in the cloth, after the water has evaporated.

Was Dutch right about wiping between shots?

Dutch Schultz's book suggests systematic methods of experimenting, to find consistent and repeatable combinations to determine the best combination of variables for your rifle. All props to him, as his book helped me a lot starting out. In less than a year using his system, was often placing and...

Was Dutch right about wiping between shots?

Woopse... 5-10% dawn/water sounds more reasonable, 40% was a bit slimy. May try it with alcohol also. In fact have had great luck with cheap Walmart windshield wiper fluid as a cleaner, may try that as well. I kinda like the smell of Simple-Green, but then I never had to work with that...

Was Dutch right about wiping between shots?

I did some experimenting on my own today, and I'm Excited at the results. I wanted to test for myself the reports of being able to shoot all day, without swabbing between shots. I also hypothosised that it is less important what you moisten the patch material with, as long as it is...

Was Dutch right about wiping between shots?

Ok, so educate me on what you're doing. As I said am relatively new (about a year) to muzzleloading, and have been using Dutch Schultz's method and noticed significant accuracy improvements over when I started, but misfires have been an occasional problem, and became a real problem this weekend...

Was Dutch right about wiping between shots?

Glad I read through this thread. I shoot a T/C. Have been using the Dutch method, dry lubed patch, wiping between shots. Shot a fun match this weekend that requires loading from the pouch, someone here had suggested eliminating the little spray bottle from my kit in favor of a tin of...

FOR SALE Rapine Minie ball molds

The first three digits are the diameter in thousandths of an inch, and the second three digits are the weight in grains. So 582-400 IS 0.582" IN DIAMETER, and 400 grains in weight. So this mold is for a .58 caliber rifled musket. Hope that helps.

    Unclogging a Lee bottom pour

My lee bottom pour flow has slowed to a slow drip, I suspect it is clogged with debris. The lead was 🔥 hot, adjusted the screw, tried poking a wire through the hole. ALL TO NO AVAIL. There is 15-18lbs of lead in the pot, don't want to try pouring the molten lead out the top, resorted to using...

Screw on pour spout for Schuetzen plastic bottles?

No shortage of appropriate sized lids, and crappie range brass out there to modify. All you need is a hand drill and appropriate sized drill bits.

opinions of best twist rate for 45

Interesting, my .45cal Seneca does just fine with 25gr. FFFg.for 25-50yds, bump it up to 40gr. For 100yds. I use .020" patch material, cut at the muzzle.

    Loading from the pouch?

Ok, could be mistaken due to assumption and misunderstanding on my part, certainly wouldn't be the first time. My question is, how do I use that information? 🤔

    Loading from the pouch?

The big bottle is my powder flask. Don't have a powder horn, or a ball bag yet. Will eventually get them though. Use dry lubed patch strips, cut at the muzzle. the spray bottles are for swabbing and cleaning, could probably eliminate one of them. The pre-moisened patches in tins are a good idea.
