FOR SALE WTB T/C peep for Hawken

I have a Lyman 57 GPR that I would part with for $80 plus shipping.

    Weight sorting cast lead balls.

I bought mostly Lyman two cavity molds, and on some each cavity casts a slightly different size, 😳 am slowly going to using just one of the cavities, using single cavity molds, or going to the less expensive CNC cut Lee molds.

    Weight sorting cast lead balls.

Was only 50yds not 100yd, am not that good yet! 1.2" at 50yds works out to roughly 2.4 MOA. This was my first 50 of 50 target, so got the patch, to explain the three ribbons, it won high score on that target, highest scoring target for the match, and I finished second place overall aggregate...

    Load Workup Order

Ok, good, because I wasn't sure of my calculations either, I was just trying to reason through your system, that's why I posted the calculations. I was thinking you had added the .005" to add a certain amount of compression on the patch cloth and lead, not just to equal the difference between...

    Load Workup Order

So, my new .36cal Rice barrel, as best I can measure land to land is .360" and groove to groove is .384" gives a difference of .024" divided by 2 would makes the lands .012" each. .360" - .010" = .350" so starting with a .350" ball, patch should be compressed to the groove depth of .384" +...

    Weight sorting cast lead balls.

Excellent Accuracy is a subjective thing, many black powder shooters think 2.0 MOA is excellent Accuracy, many factory centerfire shooters think 1.0 MOA is excellent Accuracy, many benchrest shooters think 0.2 MOA is just marginally acceptable at best. Below is a 2.4 MOA target I shot in a...

NMLRA matches, mostly paper targets and metallic sillhoettes. Use mostly T/C Hawkens.

    Weight sorting cast lead balls.

I find this very monotonous and time consuming. But it does make a difference eliminating fliers. What if anything have you guys found to expedite this process? How tight do you keep your acceptable ranges? 1.0gr, 2.0gr, 0.5gr ? I tumble to eliminate the sprue, do you weigh before or after...

    Load Workup Order

How do you measure? I have a micrometer and a digital caliper, do not have pin guages. Don't always get consistently repeatable number. Have especially hard time when barrel has odd number of lands.

    Patch knife carry

Neck sheeth, super convenient at the range, tucks into shirt when not in use.

Thompson Center 50 cal Hawken Flintlock...polish or not?

Polish it up and make it look new, will bring more from some buyers, if they don't want it shiny, brass will dull on it's own with handling and use. Bore condition will be primary determinant of price. If you don't have a bore scope, try dropping a AA battery down the bore, and take a picture.

    In hot water?

Given they where often in virgin wilderness, in areas disputed or controlled by potentially hostile natives, often allied with political adversaries such as the French and Canadians, it would only make sense they operated much as the military does, out of a base camp, going out in small groups...

    In hot water?

I imagine hot water was quite the luxury for those guys! Certainly not to be wasted on gun cleaning. In the snow much of the time, in areas such as Blackfoot territory where a thin trail or even the scent of smoke would be a death sentence, not only alerting them to your presence, but...

    In hot water?

    Oh yeah, what Grenadier1758 said!

    In hot water?

I always clean at the range, keep a small empty plastic ovaltine canister, fill half full with water from the hose, remove the nipple, since I use hook breech Thompsons, remove the barrel, insert the breech into the jug of water, pump a patch up and down until water comes out the muzzle, remove...

Are The Italian Black Powder Manufacturers Going to Go out Of Business?

I think 🤔 part of the problem is a big part of our sport is nostalgia, and tradition, and that doesn't exist for many younger people, because they where never taught history or folklore. Mention something about Jim Bridger, Daniel Boone, Kit Carson, etc.... to anyone under 50 and they usually...

    What is drill cloth?

When you say you prefer to dampen the drill cloth just before cutting at the muzzle, what does that mean? Do you dampen the entire strip at the range, dampen just the patch you are using before loading, or dampen the end of the strip after seating the ball, but before you cut, or just put the...

    What is drill cloth?

Stayed after the match to do a little more load development, thought I recalled someone saying it was too loose when I described hoe much easier it was to load, but can't find the post now. Perhapse it was just the little red shooting coach on my shoulder with the horns and tail, but of course...

    What is drill cloth?

I agree 👍 💯 % Match went well, shot high score on two stages, including my first "50" target. Finishing second overall aggregate for the match. Am liking the drill cloth so farr!

    What is drill cloth?

Normally yes, but have a match Sunday morning, and wanted to sight in and test it, before the match. Sighted in at 100yds and using my usual 10oz Denim which measures .023" uncompressed and .012" compressed, shot a 5 shot group that measures 3.8". Using the drill cloth, point of impact was a...
