    Think I'm about there!

My groups tightened up quite a bit by switching to 2F, but, then again, mine is a .54 caliber, and conventional wisdom says that is what I'm supposed to be using.

    Negotiation Time

Buy it with your "butter and egg money," slip it into your safe with your other guns, and act like it has been there 20 years. Worked like a charm for me for a long time -- that is until I had to add a second safe because I ran out of room in the first one. Then she became just a little bit...

    Think I'm about there!

The four-o'clock hole is from a shot with extra-long ignition delay caused by too much powder in the pan. The next three are the ones clustered around the center. Next week will be more telling as I stretch her out to 75 and 100 yards.

Second range session with the Kibler Colonial

I have since had a third range session where I shot nothing but FFg (Posted elsewhere under the title "Think I'm about there." Below is a 50 yard target from that session using 90 grains of GOEX FFg, .530 ball, .018 pillow ticking, and lubed with TOTW mink oil: I am out of town until next...

    Think I'm about there!

I'm also very happy with the performance of the lock and flint. I'm now up to 60 shots on the original flint that came with the rifle, not counting dry fires and a few flashes in the pan caused by carbon buildup and insufficient vent picking (my bad). On shot #51, I had my first failure to...

    Think I'm about there!

Third range session today with the new Kibler Colonial. I switched over from FFFg Schuetzen to FFg Goex. Right off the bat, groups were tighter, albeit still low. So I did the old shoot and file, shoot and file, shoot and file -- until I ended up with this four shot group at 50 yards with 90...

Second range session with the Kibler Colonial

Well, I still got a ways to go, but I'm moving in the right direction. Went yesterday to the range and fired 30 shots (still on the original flint; now up to 45 shots). Had three misfires in the 30 -- all were flashes in the pan. I know two of them were from insufficient priming, as I was...

First range session with new Kibler Colonial

Finally made it to Wilson Shoals Range (when they were open). It took me forever to get all my gear on the bench and get set up to shoot. I decided to go straight to 50 yards. If I couldn't get on paper, then I'd bring her back to 25. Started with 70 grains of fffg, which is a good all...

    Well, she's finished!

Just returned from the range. Going to post results in separate thread when I get through cleaning the rifle.

    Well, she's finished!

Maybe just a little. For the past couple of weeks its been apply this, sand that, scale this, reapply that -- basically every single day (sometimes several times a day)! But there is still plenty to do. I'm a shooter, a hunter, a reloader and a bass fisherman! I've neglected these other...

    Well, she's finished!

Won't be any range photos today. I totally forgot that the range I use is closed on Mondays. Got there and found it locked up tighter than a drum. Fortunately, it's only 20 minutes from the House. I'll leave all my stuff (minus the rifle) in the truck and get an early start there in the morning.

    Well, she's finished!

The finish is Minwax Antique Oil. It's a very low luster oil finish that a lot of builders of custom hunting rifles are starting to use for its lack of reflection properties. It's already got six coats on it. I will get a little shinier with each additional coat.

    Well, she's finished!

I'll post results and pictures of my range session -- good or bad -- later today.
  14. GAHUNTER60

    Well, she's finished!

Problem solved. Just a few passes with 60 grit, 150, then 220 to smooth her up and she works like a charm! May be a little tight, but that's not necessarily a bad thing on a woods rifle.
  15. GAHUNTER60

    Well, she's finished!

Thanks, I'll try that when I get back from the range!
  16. GAHUNTER60

    Well, she's finished!

BTW, my wife wants to know why I got one "with those ugly zebra stripes". I guess it's a good thing I didn't order one with upgraded wood! :)
  17. GAHUNTER60

    Well, she's finished!

My new Kibler Colonial .54 is headed to the range today for the first time -- warts and all (I know where they are, but I'm not going to point them out). Only issue now is the ramrod sticks to the point of only being able to pull it out with a pair of vice grips. Been trying to heat it and...

Of what style is a Kibler Colonial Rifle?

You know that; and now I know that (since you just told me). But the folks I'm lying to don't know that (and don't really care). Honestly, I'm not a chronic liar. Just having fun!

Of what style is a Kibler Colonial Rifle?

Lancaster sounds good. I can always claim that it is of the early Lancaster style, as opposed to the more recognizable and familiar late Lancaster rifles built in the Golden Age, 1790-1830. MIC DROP!!!!! :)

Of what style is a Kibler Colonial Rifle?

I think I'll go with "It's a copy of a style built in the Shenandoah Valley, specifically three shops outside of Staunton, Virginia, circa 1760 to 1767. Not to be confused with James River styles built in the same period!" How's that sound? :ghostly: As I learned from the great Sheldon...
