    Lifespan of a Rifle?

Depends on use....I have read where the market hunters (Long Hunters) literally would wear out thier firearms within a few years, due to continuous exposure to the elements. The fancier the rifle, the wealthier the owner and the better cared for it was...thats why so many surviving long rifles...

    ID Help Please

Looks like one of many imported ...possibly spanish? ...inexpensive ML from back in the seventies, early eighties. There are probably markings on the barrel indicating the manufacturer, caliber, etc.

Kibler Rifles What Caliber or Gauge

Are you actually finding them in numbers at shows? I know plenty of folks are building them for resale, but havent been to a show in a few years to know the diff. Finding a built one, I think depends largely on the individual rifle / work put into it as much as just caliber. In the Colonial or...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

This week end was the NY ML associations fall shoot at the Oxford Rod and Gun club...always a fun time. I sure wish more folks participated though. I shot very mediocre, using my Lyman .50 GPR and KIbler .58 Colonial, which hadnt seen light in two years. The shoot runs over three days labor day...

    Flint knapping help

How many shots did you get out of the flint from new to now?

    How heavy is too heavy?

That rifle sure is pretty.... I think "heavy" is strictly to the individual...but 16 sure is a chunk.....I could certainly see it as a "stand" rifle for hunting, but that is a lot of weight to hold out on the range...but certainly 16 lbs helps with the recoil!

    GPR

welcome! Tell us a bit about yerself! Lefties are out there, but you are going to have to really look....check out on line auctions, Midway, Dixie Arms, Track of the Wolf, lots of ML online stores....but the lefty gpr is a rare bird.

Interesting day in the antique shop....

Great score! Yep, pretty sure the metal tool is a one up turn screw.

Do You Actually Use Your Expensive Custom Guns or Keep Them as Safe Queens?

I think for some, it is a matter of perspective. I have had a number of folks express shock that I shot my Kibler (to them a safe queen) regularly...it is nice but certainly not regal or embellished. Some acquaintances had the extra money they could afford safe queens...and lots of...

    Time machine Hawken

Shot by the amazing blind soldier Doogie Blinkalot in a high cross wind with the sun in his eyes still hung over from stealing the parsons "holy water"! Foot notes in history ya just dont hear about.

    Pedersoli .54 Mountain Rifle (Hawken-type)

Certainly safe and reasonable starting at 60 grains. I shoot my .54 flinter with 80 with a .015 patch.

Taking a flintlock i to the RSA

There are several very good hunting oriented travel agents...We used Travel Express when we went to SA two years ago, and they were invaluable. If you are not using an agent....especially the first time going to Africa, it is a good idea. Things go wrong in Africa like no where else. The agent...

    Origins of chili con carne

I think it is funny so much thought is put into the origins of .....things. Most often, and my belief, is like chili....it was simply a poor families "everlasting stew" made of whatever local ingredients made it palatable....over time, the tastiest and most practical ingredients survived. thus...

    Tang site ?

Williams makes tang mounted adjustable sights for ML...I have two on my Lyman GPR. I am not sure what other styles /models they may have. They are a modern style target aperture sight.

    Ammunition for a muzzleloader.

If wanting historically accurate for the great plains region for longer range, more power.....I am thinking still a heavy single shot....think, mountain rifle (Hawkin style) with a heavy powder load....I think I read that their original powder loads were much more than we likely shoot...

    ID Chunk/Target Percussion

I dont know anything about it...but looks like a beautiful rifle. Is it broken/cracked at the wrist?

    .54 for Target?

I used to shoot .54, primarily for hunting deer. I still prefer it for that. For about four seasons now though, I have been shooting in a weekly league, with targets at 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards. No doubt, the .50 is a better ball for me with its flatter (lighter( ball. It also has the advantage...

Thoughts on an original 1860 COLT Army

I get the idea...Dad had an original 1860 which I never had a chance to shoot, sold to get his first deer rifle. I would love an original 1860, but could never justify the money for an original. To shoot, I would certainly justify finding a 2nd generation. I already have a Pietta 1860, which I...

Powder Horn questions for new owner.

Perhaps a drop of super glue to the crack? It will penetrate easily, though I agree it is highly doubtful you would ever have a concern. Horns can take a whole lot of knocking around.
