    Tang site ?

I've seen tang sights on a few olden ML rifles, mostly the target type. Never saw the same sight twice; seems as if some local gunsmith/blacksmith made them for the shooter. If you're talking vernier sights, never saw one on a ML. I did put a small peep sight on one of my caplocks; not hard to...

    Hunters Who Are NMLRA Members

I have been a life member of the NMLRA and the NRA for a few decades. Both have been targeted by gun restriction groups, but by their their efforts we can still own firearms. And if one believes that muzzleloaders will not be affected by bans, they will only be the next target, because "They can...

    Starr revolver discoveries

Very informative; a bit more trivia for my Starr 1863. May have to look for a bullet mold.

Thoughts on an original 1860 COLT Army

I have an 1860 with two serial numbers, according to references both made in 1863, with traces of the inspector's stamp. I did get a good buy on it because of the mismatched SNs. It is shootable, but I rarely shoot my antique firearms. Damage done to an antique, even using it for it's intended...

    found a 1849 Pocket shooter

I agree with your observation about interior finishes; I've noticed the same on the several originals I have or worked on as compared to replicas, even the Colt 2nd & 3rd generations.

    Kentucky pistol carry

I made my "holster" from two pieces of latigo leather about 2 1/2" wide; looped and sewed the ends of each in two loops, one for the belt, one for the pistol. Cap or flint made not difference. Used it for reenacting and hunting. Very simple to make and better than the belt hook

    New guy pistol question?

I've used Ted Cash straight line cappers with Remington & Colt clones for decades, no problems. I use a snail for the caplock rifles. Now that I'm well into my "golden years", I have trouble with using individual caps out of the tin, so load up a couple Ted Cash cappers for real use. Other...

    Value of original 1851 Navy

As Rifleman said, prices are all over, but doubt you could get even a beat up one for less than a thou. Have to be through in examination; bought one on an internet auction a dozen years or so that had rather extensive damage not visible in photos, but I didn't pay that much. Also have one with...

    Help!

George Moller does discuss S Cogswell and his "New York Gun Factory" as in briskness from 1810 until shortly after the end of the war. His photo shows "Cogswell" in an arc under SNY/ALBANY, but the lock ends in a tail, not rounded like in you photo, and barrel length is the usual 41+". However...

    James Lowe 1740 Pistols. Shootable?

Thanks: good to know, even if I was being a bit facetious.

    James Lowe 1740 Pistols. Shootable?

No: just loaded out of curiosity to see how much they would hold. I looked at the data sheet I made for the museum; they were .59 caliber, but didn't include powder quantity. This brace of Queen Annes were not safe to shoot under any circumstances; brass frames don't take too much abuse. I do...

    James Lowe 1740 Pistols. Shootable?

Appears to be screw barrel pistols: took a couple apart for our museum; they hold very little powder. Don't recall exactly how much I could put in under the ball, but it was less than 20 grains 3F with about .50+ size bore; wondered how the ball even made it out the muzzle. If he really wants to...

Does anyone even do this anymore?

No on revolvers, yes on caplocks. Some flint shooters flash before the first load; I don't and never had problems.

Picked up a 51 Navy from Cabella's today after looking for a used gun for about a decade.

I recently picked up a fancy engraved Pieta 1851 with white grips from Midway; it was on sale. The grips were way oversized, took about two hours of filing/scraping/buffing to get them to fit the frame. When I shot it, it shot to point of aim, the only Colt clone I have ever shot that did so...

    Bad CCI caps

Don't know how many thousands of CCI caps and a few hundred Remingtons that I have shot. All worked fine except for a couple hundred CCIs in blister packs I bought on a whim many years ago. The caps were a bit undersized, and had some difficulty seating all the way; a few required two snaps...

Possible Colt percussion revolver in use by Afghan police in the 1880?

Maybe Colt, maybe not. While in Turkey I bought three colt look-a-likes, one may have been a Belgium Colt Brevete, the others definitely not. Patents were not observed in the middle east, they made whatever they wanted.

Grease packing revolver internals, why synthetic grease?

It has been only the past month or so since I read of folks using grease on arbors or "packing" the internals. I've been shooting revolvers since 1967, and currently have a passel of originals and repros. In all my shooting, I've only used the same gun oil on the arbor as I have for the rest of...

    Sighting in bp revolvers

As for adding a front sight, my 3rd Gen Colt 1860 is a fine shooter, so I pulled the front bead out, used brass stock thick enough to cover the hole, then cut a blade sight. I left a projection on the bottom, filed it round to fit the original hole, then silver soldered it in. Filed it thin...

    Caliber / bore question

You would need a hefty load in a .54 to equal a smokeless powder charge in say a .45 ACP. I have a couple .54s, caplock and flintlock, and with the 35 to 40 grain 3F loads, recoil is not a problem.

    Coning

Used a coning tool to repair the damage to the muzzle of one of my caplocks; shoots a lot better now.
