    The lock was actually clean and rust free on the inside. The brass bands are real brass, not plated. The vent seems home drilled. And its indian and appears to have no proof marks. The letter L is stamped in several places all over it. I dont know if this thing is safe to fire. Heres the only...

    That thing has been in two pieces and then welded and smoothed out. Can you see it while looking down the bore?

    The wood sabot on howitzers is for the transitional space between the larger barrel tube and the smaller chamber but straight tube cannons used them too. They were the connection point between the powder bag and the projectile. Seen here-

    What makes a Howitzer a Howitzer is the necked down/reduced size chamber compared to the rest of the tube. It allows for a much lighter barrel. See here-

    Rawoodall, you did a great job. Good idea on the brass spacer too. Looks like a slightly aged mountain man gun now. Amazing to take a plain jane production gun and have it be your own custom job. Nice!
