    What do I have here?

If you think the flash hole is located a little too close to the bottom of the pan, a simple solution is to remove the lock from the gun and use a Dremel (or other rotary tool) with an abrasive cylinder to grind away a bit of the pan floor and polish it. This is an efficient, quick fix that...

    Longest Flintlock rifle

I find the very long barrels interesting but impractical for the kind of shooting I do. Worst of all is the magnified chore of cleaning such a long tube.

Beth Gilgun, noted for period clothing, has passed ...

Sad news indeed. Beth was a guiding light for many history buffs, even far beyond New England. She will be greatly missed, but her influence and legacy will last a long time.

I won't be selling my H&A any time soon.......

It may be worthwhile to contact L&R locks and see if they offer an RPL (replacement) lock that will fit the mortise on your rifle. As others have indicated, a different frizzen might be adapted to fit. If you prefer to put this into the hands of a pro, contact Brad Emig at Cabin Creek...

    Bouncing and buzzing frizzen.

Surely this problem, like most others, is fixable. Don't give up; you will eventually figure out a workable solution. You might also contact Brad Emig at Cabin Creek Muzzleloading in Hallam, PA: 717-757-5841; www.cabincreek.net. He is well known for fixing flintlock issues.

    Belgian Shotgun??

If this shotgun is Belgian, I would expect to see a proof mark stamped into the barrel with an E over LG (representing Liege).

    Caywood Wilson Trade Gun

I am the fortunate owner of the smoothbore that Dave describes. I have owned and shot the gun since 1997. I was always happy with the quality and the accuracy, but the slow ignition kept me from enjoying the gun to the fullest. Dave's modifications were precisely the right remedy. I am delighted...

Quality of flints from Dixie Gun Works

My favorite flints are the French blondes. They are available from Heritage Products (314-741-7592; www.heritage-products.com). Prices are $24-27 a dozen (plus $9 postage or more). These are not the least expensive flints on the market, but the quality is excellent.

    NMLRA fighting

The NMLRA's Territorial match program brings standardized, national-quality competition out into the field for the benefit of shooters who cannot travel to Friendship, Indiana. For years Territorials have been held in individual states all around the country. In the Northeast, for example...

Looking for book recommendations on French flintlock muskets

Here are two more good resources on early flintlock firearms in France: Selected Treatises on Gunmaking and Shooting from Nineteenth-Century Europe, translated by J. Ashby Morton and Eric Bye; 262 pages soft cover; available from the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, PO Box 67...

    New NMLRA member

Also, if you plan to stay in a motel you should make reservations as early as possible. There is always plenty of camping on the NMLRA grounds - both modern (campers, RVs, modern tents) and traditional (canvas tents). You may also find motel rooms in the towns of Milan and Batesville. Good luck!
