A North Bucks Lehampton Valley Spring rifle

Exquisite and tasteful... I love the wood and the color. Thanks for the details on building this fine piece.

To cut Damascus Percussion Shotgun, or not to cut ?

This is a handsome shotgun and it appears to be in good condition. If it were mine I certainly would not shorten the barrels. Respect the integrity of this nice antique, which has so far escaped the butcher's hacksaw!

A hearty welcome from Vermont! My family is in Fredrikstad.

    Can this rifle be helped?

As a wall hanger or decorator, this old gun is still worth more than you paid for it; no need to feel that you got stung! If there were some compelling reason to return the rifle to shooting condition, the quickest and easiest fix would be to have a brand-new barrel and breech plug installed...

Flintlock , Eagle on lock ( American ) Belgium 15/16'' Tapered Octagon to round, 51'' long barrel. .54 cal.

This looks like a Belgian trade musket; many were sent to Africa during the colonial era.

    Flintlock ID

The National Muzzleloading Rifle Association has two field reps in Oregon: Walter Robert Evens (Cottage Grove; [email protected]; 541-315-2030); and Roger Schaefer (Salem; [email protected]; 503-371-4209). These fellows will be a very good source of information and guidance.

    What in tarnation is this?

This appears to be a handsome, early piece. I would not hold some honest age and damage against it. I strongly advise against breaking this pistol up - it deserves to be kept together. You can buy modern-made locks cheaply (from Chambers, L&R, Davis, and others) and they will function very well...

    First flintlock advice needed

Another suggestion: visit the web page for the NMLRA (National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association - www.nmlra.org/field-representatives) and check out the list of their field reps. Maybe there is one who lives close enough to you to be of help. I second your wish to shoot a traditional flintlock...

recommendations for cleaning and restoring originals

I would not sand blast any visible exterior surface unless everything else I tried failed to remove the rust. I think that minimal intervention is advisable in dealing with antique guns. One of the first Colts pictured has plenty of rust on the part of the frame that will be covered by the...

    Machining marks in bore

JB Non-embedding Bore Cleaning Compound (from Brownell's and probably other sources) did a very good job rescuing a pitted barrel I own. It takes a while but the results are worth the effort.

    TC Seneca .36

Hornady also sells .350 diameter 000 buckshot in five-pound boxes. The last box I bought a couple of years ago was under $30 and well worth it. These round balls have no flat spot from a sprue and are very convenient to use. Casting small-caliber balls is a bit tedious and this box of buckshot...
