1:44 twist 50 cal and lead conicals

I found out that too much powder/velocity would strip the soft lead from the lands, causing erratic accuracy. If you have fffg start at 60 grains and go up in 5 grain increments. If all you have is ffg then begin with 70 grains. I used 355 grain pure lead conicals with a 1:48" twist with...

Great hunt this evening. I laughed a lot.

The brown jersey gloves were wet from an all day hunt, and the day was cold, quite cold. Finally, at the end of the day, the deer filed out nigh of 40 yards of my position leaned against the line fence. With frozen fingers the hammer was cocked. The mzlder resting on my knee the forefinger...

Squirrel Hunting and shooting RB into the air.

The round ball is the least aerial dynamic projectile fired out of a rifle. I shouldn't go near as far as a .22lr. Still, caution should be taken in populated rural settings. Getting harder to do more all the time around here.

    2023 Fall Squirrel Season...........

Glad to know you are recuperating well. Next time you pull the .32 out to head for them hills it won't be with a hobbling gate.

What to do in between hunts....

Early on in my Mzldr career I loaded up the Renegade with powder and Maxiball and commenced to snapping 3 caps without successfully firing the rifle. Hmmm, what is a boy to do? Took it upon myself to remove the nipple, dribble powder into the drum, replace the nipple back, cap and 'pop'. Only...

    Montana Heritage Season Opener

Now that was a hunt! Thanks for sharing, mtfishn.

    Elk hunting max range.

Only shot elk with a premium 30 cal CF. Looked like golf balls traversed through the heart/lung region, three times. Still, she walked, albeit slowly, about 40 yards before succumbing to imminent death. I've shot more WT deer with 355 grain 50 cal pure lead conicals than PRB's, but I have shot...

I Told a Big, Fat Lie a Couple of Weeks Ago

I take it by your moniker that you are a pastor. Just recall that Jesus is the one who said to Peter, "Kill and eat." Emotions and freedoms can, as I'm sure you know, are two different things, good or bad. You did just fine.

Cow elk with a .50 flinter and rb

Well you do at 300 + yards! LOL

Cow elk with a .50 flinter and rb

O, you are in trouble now. Never will you be able to drive past a hickory or osage tree and not see the bow potential they have standing there. Been years since I made the last self bow, or sinew backed recurve, but the tools, supplies and staves still speak to me when I walk past them. Them...

Cow elk with a .50 flinter and rb

I take it you quite enjoyed your trial run of using a traditional sidelock. With those results, I would too. That PRB combination did the trick well and put meat on the ground. Beautiful cow and wonderful story to go along with the photo. Thanks for sharing.

    2023 Fall Squirrel Season...........

O, I've hunted the busytails considerably with the Cherokee in years past. Put it together as a kit Spring break of 1987. Dropped many squirrels in the ensuing years. But with a growing family squirrels were regulated well on to the back burner. Hunted with the prb .32 in June of 2022 down...

Traditional Pennsylvania hunt in the late season - anyone?

Kicking myself for not getting into Flintlocks in my storied MLDR career. But I've been mulling it over the past couple years. Now you have me really getting interested in that period of blackpowder guns. Hope you gentlemen have a wonderful time, many deer and excellent success.

    2023 Fall Squirrel Season...........

Been enjoying your ramblings and writings, ETipp. Since I broke my ramrod earlier in the Fall, and haven't made a satisfactory maple or hickory rod, though tried on numerous efforts, the .32 Cherokee sits safely in its place. Been using the .22 for the few recent trips out to collect a little...

    Trad. Muzzleloading Publications?

There used to be years ago, though I have the impression that unfortunately the publication/organization didn't survive the online advances of information dissemination. I've scoured articles online at times to enjoy a good Traditional Muzzle loading hunting yarn to fill the void. The NMLRA...

    Meat for the freezer

My, that turned out pretty. Excellent work, Eric. I've admired your ability to craft a bow and rifle stock for years. Your finished pieces are always a pleasure to behold.

    Meat for the freezer

I enjoy your brush blind. That you took the time to create it out of what is found around your hunting spot is so much more about hunting than buying a pop up and plopping it down. The DIY aspect of your hunting gear is quite appealing. The tractor, though, how many hours do you have in...

    WV Here I come!

I appreciate the suggestion and knowledge on this subject, gentlemen. Not having shot deer in the mountains I wouldn't have thought of either of those scenarios, the direction of travel or the heart/lung shot dilemma that can waste a whole deer due to not being able to retrieve it in a timely...

    First successful muzzleloader hunt

I purchased a used GPR about two years ago. It is a mid 80's model which needed a bit of slicking up but I was able to put it to use that first MZlder season on alargedoe, as well. They are dandy rifles, especially in .54 caliber. I hope to repeat the success again soon.

Bad Shot Leaves a Hard Tracking Job

She didn't last long with that shot, but made for a tough time finding her. Glad you recovered her successfully. Now, tell us more about the hunt, rifle and other pertinent information......
