    Homemade Squirrel Skinning Stand

Grimord, I think you meant to say you step on the tail, instead of the head? Correct me if I am wrong but the 'Step On' method I researched shows the tail was stepped on after making the initial incisions as you described, and then by pulling upwards on the hind feet the skin peals up the body...

    Homemade Squirrel Skinning Stand

Here are a few photos from the early season in Kentucky this past June of using one of the skinners I fabricated. The first picture has the feet hooked into their respective slots while the tail is slit from underneath through the tailbone, but leaving the skin on the top of the tail: Then...

    Homemade Squirrel Skinning Stand

I fabricated a few nearly like that this past winter, but with a stout string to hang them off a tree limb. They help the process tremendously. Now go take those grandkids to the squirrel woods!

Traditional Pennsylvania hunt in the late season - anyone?

I am over in SW Ohio and envy that late season you PA fellow enjoy. I bask in the fresh downloads of videos coming from your wonderland at the beginning of every year with sparks flying and smoke rolling. Of all my Mzlders not one has evolved into a flintlock, though. That should be remedied...

    2023 Fall Squirrel Season...........

Glad to read of your squirrel exploits, Etipp. I've got to say that the 20 grains of fffg under a lone PRB is quite loud in the woods I've hunted the little rodents in. Much more of a boom than a 22lr, for sure. Yet, as you do, I enjoy the success of dropping a squirrel out of the tree with...

BEST CALIBER TO HUNT DEER W/ FLINTLOCK RIFLE

I have a number of 50's. A couple years ago purchased a used 54. Been hunting with Roundballs after being a dedicated heavy conical shooter. I do like the umph of the .54 rb over the .50 rb on deer. Both work but bigger is better in my experience.

Round ball in my fusil full jug choke.

I'm not much of a smoothbore shooter with BP, but glad you are enjoying the long gun with ball and shot. Scratch that ich and then let us know how the deed, and deer, went down. Heck, we even like picts of squirrels and rabbits that succumb to shot loads, too. If it takes a new gun to prompt...

    2023 Fall Squirrel Season...........

You'll like this information even better, Indiana's squirrel season for Grey and Fox Squirrels starts August 15th. The Mid October season is for Grey and Red Foxes in the Furbearer section. I'm just across the border of IN and am thinking about going over there a time or two this Fall.

Finished my early squirrel season with a very unique hunt…..

Your experience gives me pause for thought. Last June when my son and I ventured south of Somerset to squirrel hunt it was late in the Spring season. That last morning was our best time in those woods with a flurry of activity. My calendar places that at June 10th. This year we camped and...

    Simply amazing

It is amazing what a pure lead ball will do upon impact. Nigh of 35 years ago I took aim at the head of a boar squirrel peering at me out of the side of his eye at about my chin height as it was clinging to the bark of a tree. The .315" ball flew true and the quarry dropped to the forest floor...

    Squirrel season is open!

I made this recipe over the weekend, and, yes, it was very good. I have nearly stopped frying any food but broke that rule for these two squirrels. Believe the gentleman when he says that putting the breaded and fried squirrel will taste even better when recooked in the gravy. It was fantastic.

The Words We Use and How They Define Us

I specifically shot this deer. If someone teaching a class to potential new hunters to get them involved in the sport I won't become enraged if they use kill, catch, or harvest. They are preparing the next generation to continue that which we love to engage in. When I removed her entrails...

Looking for suggestions as to how to get into hunting

A dozen years ago, before hitting 50 and while undergoing a full life upheaval, I committed to never be the man I was, nor the man I was destined to be if I continued on in my overbearing and petty ways that alienated those I wanted to be with away from my unpleasant personality. I snarled at...

Looking for suggestions as to how to get into hunting

I will counter the crusty response about hunter safety courses being complete nonsense. For the past thousands of years the vast majority of hunters had older hunters teaching them the basics, as I did, and many others on this board. That has all changed as society has made a drastic sea...

    Powder question

Hello Crow, I'm not a BP shotgunner but have shot many pounds of BP in rifle form and, yes, 120 grains is far more than necessary for that, unless grizzlies are on the menu. It is the slow season on this board but try checking out Skychief's load for a comparison at the top of this forum. I...

    Arkansas squirrel opener

These skinning jigs turned out pretty well, all in all. Modifications needed are to enlarge the openings of the leg slots another 1/8" while keeping the thin ending point the same. This would allow the legs to start into a those cutouts smoother. Also, on the small Grey squirrels we shot, the...

    Squirrel season is open!

As for the poplar flowers, yes, I noticed them on the ground but never knew that squirrels eat them. Makes sense, though. They don't just nibble on nuts all the time. Those pictured above are yellow poplar, aka Tulip Poplar due to the flowering buds. Hmm, all I was really searching for were...

    Squirrel season is open!

Son and I returned last night from hunting squirrels in Southern Kentucky. We better learned their habits last June, but, WOW, were they ever stealthy this May. Our first evening we spotted 7, reduced to our possession 3. After that saw in the distant tree tops 3 at most, heard 2 others...

    Arkansas squirrel opener

Nice Shooting and rifle. I took my .32 Cherokee out last Spring to Kentucky, but didn't connect. Found out my sights were different than where the ball was hitting. My son and I plan to swing down that way again this Spring for a bit more camping and hunting that tall timber and steep hills...

    Airgun pellets and muzzloaders.

My guess is this is a rather short range affair. Yet, even if only one pellet connected in the right place said rabbit would lose that encounter instantly. Way to keep the legs exercised and the larder full.
