    Smoothbore makes meat again

Amazing that chest shot didn't drop her within 50 yards. It looks to be a perfect hit. She was dead, you only hastened the demise with ball #2, which was perfectly justified. Glad for your success and memorable experience. The spice of life for us hunter/gatherer types.

    .32 out of a .40

Sometimes it is not what is said, but how it is said that smells of negativity. Yes, there were replies on this thread that smelled of that foul attitude. I've just read other posts that snide comments were left that really didn't need to be. The older I get the easier it is to want to allow...

Conical bullets best suited for Thompson Center shallow grooves 1/48" barrels.

I just posted this for a fellow asking about the right conical bullet for elk. It fits in this thread as well: T/C 370 grain Maxiballs and 355 grain Maxihunters shot fantastic in my T/C 1" in 48" twist T/C barrels. I cast the Maxihunters out of pure. I did find out in testing that 75 grains of...

    Renegade for elk hunting

T/C 370 grain Maxiballs and 355 grain Maxihunters shot fantastic in my T/C 1" in 48" twist T/C barrels. I cast the Maxihunters out of pure. I did find out in testing that 75 grains of fffg is where accuracy fell off. The report was akin to a center fire rifle blast instead of the normal...

A Man Has to Know His Limitations!

Good hunting. Pastor B. Hope to see your smiling mug posing over a dandy whitetail on here. That would be wonderful. And I have no plans to continually badger you on how to, or not how to shoot. Just pleased to enjoy your posts and the knowledge you share.

Removing the barrel on a hooked breech rifle for cleaning, yes or no??

Most of my time. There are occasions when a clear hose is seated on the nipple with a plug on the end. Alcohol is poured into the barrel full with the rifle propped standing up. After a while the plug is pulled, the Alcohol and slug pouring into a jug and the bore swabbed with wet Alcohol...

    Hawken vs Renegade butt end

With the same projectile and charge the Renegade's felt recoil is considerably less than the T/C Hawkin. I have both. Won't feel it when hunting, though. As for American vs English butt styles, my take is if someone hostile to your presence is after your life in a new world wilderness...

    First deer with a smoothbore

There are a couple methods to canning meat. After slicing into 1" cubes brown the outside meat in a pan with a bit of oil and the seasonings you enjoy. Don't cook thoroughly, only brown the outside. If there is any liquid add to the meat in the jar, but most of the broth will come from the...

    TN DEER II

Wonderful. Glad you are still enjoying the hunt, even without trad archery tackle. I used to make my own bows and loved that type of hunting greatly. Might pick it up again, but if not the muzzleloaders are always fun to tote afield. TC Renegades are a no nonsense get it done rifle. It was...

    Muzzleloader season camp

Good for you. I've spent a few nights in my son's larger tent in Colorado and then again this past June in KY for a squirrel hunt. Would love a good deer camp such as you show in the photos and need to talk him into it. I suspect he will be open to the idea. I needed to leave my last el...

1863 Shiloh Sharps Model 100 Rifle

Wonderful post, incredible photo and satisfying commentary. Thanks to all for posting and responding. I enjoyed Rick's book, that very one, and his magazine articles from those storied years. After my first deer hunt with a borrowed T/C Hawkin rifle in the Fall of 1986 I read everything BP I...

The last hawken I’ll ever have to buy! Roller, Weimer, England!

Elegantly simple, as a mountain man rifle should be. So glad to know that rifle will hunt!

    Deer Hide Day 3

The last hide I fleshed and stretched with the hair on was salted heavily repeatedly until the water stopped running out. I left that hide stretched on the frame for a couple years in the garage with the "I'll get to it soon" mindset. When I did get to it, after rinsing all the salt out of the...

First Batch of Deer Fat into Tallow

Two 14 Oz jars of strained Deer Tallow. The white jar is cooled as the off color jar has yet to cool fully and turn white. From what I've read online best to keep this in the refrigerator when not in use. Very slick grease. Can see where adding a stiffener to a small extent is helpful for...

First Batch of Deer Fat into Tallow

On the stove in the pot as this is typed. Hoping for some good lube off the fat covered doe I shot last week. Any and all recipes are welcome as I hope to make this for Patch and Conical lube.

    Deer Hide Day 3

Hardwood ashes in water, especially those from the Ash tree, is what I've used to soak hides in for the hair to slip off. Then, once washed, stretched out to dry into rawhide for projects. I've at least one full rawhide rolled up and stored. For a pair of gloves or winter mitts it maybe worth...

Flintlock elk hunt (not mine, but...)

That was slices of the heart. Clay relishes this tradition according to his other videos.

    I, have a T/C White Mt. carbine .

I found that the 320 grain Lee REAL Bullet was more accurate than the 355 grain TC Maxihunter in the short 1/20 twist Barrel. This was with 65 grains of fffg Blackpowder. You'll need to test the components that can be scrounged up to find out what works best for your rifle.

    Traditions Trapper Thanksgiving Doe

If you only plan on taking 20 yard shots, then sure. LOL. Congratulations to the OP on his accomplishment. Took much patience and stealth to pull off so well. I'll keep taking my long guns to the woods, though. I'm not that good of a pistol shot.

    The experiment.

And, how does it taste? Inquiring minds are wont to know, especially since duck and goose have not been a staple of my culinary pleasures. Only had Greater Canada goose once, very dark, much like venison. Possibly duck once when a young lad. Not a pursuit I've been exposed to though friends...
