Best product to clean neglected Thompson Center Hawken 50 Cal

BoreTech BP cleanier, JB Bore paste or polishing compound. Plug the breech and allow the solvent to soak for a day to remove the junk in the chamber. Look at a chamber scrapper as well.

    54 problems

Start with cleaning. I bought a T/C Hawken from a friend and it wouldn't shoot worth darn. He had been shooting sabots. I bought BoreTech BP cleaner. It took a while and a lot of brushing and patches but I got it squared away. I also polished the bore with JB Paste and patches before...

    Making a flintlock waterproof …

If the weather is damp, I insert a wood toothpick into the touch hole and set the frizzen down. If I think a shot is imminent, I pull the toothpick and prime.

Newbie Looking for Advice on Failed Ignition of Main Charge

I don't pull balls. I have been using the compressed air dischargers for as long as I can remember. Unless I am hunting in the next day or so, I remove the ball and powder at the end of the hunt and recharge on the next trip.

How Does a Touch Hole Liner Improve Reliability?

I have seen guys shooting guns without liners who have cones the touch hole a bit trying to direct the flash into the chamber. I have only ever shot production guns and the first thing I do is buy a Uncle Mike's liner.

    Stock coming in too dark

I would think that you would need to remove the stain. Alcohol maybe? How about calling Brownel's and asking one of their Techs? Same for Chambers. Just me, but I like it.

    Rain down the barrel?

How about a tompion? Our flintlock season is after Christmas so snow is possible. I don't hunt in the rain but if it is a mist or fog, I insert a wood toothpick into the touch hole and set the frizzen down on it. If something show, pull out the toothpick and prime. It adds time but keeps the...

Flintlock accuracy and need help finding load

Try FFFg. I have been shooting it for 40 years. Burns cleaner and faster velocities. I know you don't have any but maybe someone is close to you and can help you out with a bit to try. Given the money you have in the rifle, it would be worth the money to try some. My T/C and Lyman 1-48 twist...

    Pedersoli flintlock not cocking

The first step should have been removing the lock and posting a photo of the inside parts along with the post. Would be helpful and keep everyone from guessing? Who knows about the flints or position of such.

SOLD TC Hawken 54 Needs TLC

The crack is an easy fix. I recently bought a Marln 336A that had a cracked stock. Turned out to be worse than expected. I bought a bottle of Loctite 420 from Grainger and used it on the stock. The 420 is very thin and runs into the full crack. I spread it slightly and then clamped it under...

    Commercial RB hardness?

I am very familiar with bullet alloys. I used to cast a lot of pistol bullets in #2 alloy. The end of old style wheel weights brought that to an end. Now, any casting is 20-1 for original TD carbine and Sharps carbine. I have run them as low as 40-1. The little bit of tin added to the pure...

    Commercial RB hardness?

I have a few hand cast round balls that came with a rifle. My commercial cast Hornady balls seem harder. Has anyone actually tested them?

FOR SALE Price Reduced Thompson Center Heavy Hawken .54 cal UNFIRED

I had both, Renegade and Hawken in .54 flints. The Hawken has the 28" barrel vs 26" of the Renegade. Beyond the furniture, I found the Hawken stock has a bit more drop. Great gun!

    deeper grooves?

I was talking with a knowledgeable guy, and he said that he got better groups with his stock guns if he had the grooves deepened a bit. Anyone else find that? How much accuracy did you gain? My Deerstalker cap and T/C flint shoot OK with patched RB, but they could do better.
