WITHDRAWN Reduced .45 Thompson Center Hawken Barrel

Will this drop into a .50 cal. TC Hawken without modification ? Twist ? Thanks. SW

Traditions Shedhorn failing to set off #11 caps

I looked one over at my local sporting goods store and I believe this is correct, and it seemed to me it came equipped with a musket nipple. Overall quality seemed quite good. IIRC, it is a 28 twist so it is pretty much dedicated to conicals. They have several models in stock that I looked at so...

WITHDRAWN Traditions St. Louis hawkin 50 cal

For someone who wants to get started with a very decent hunting rifle at an extremely fair price this is a good deal. If all functions as it should, these things are accurate killers with round balls or conicals. The unfinished kit itself, in my local sporting good store, costs considerably more...

Thanks, it's why I asked you. I already respect your common sense opinions on these things. This is really helpful. SW

    Heartbreaks

Hi Longcruise. Any idea on cost of the Hoyt treatment to .54 and then shipping both ways to our half of the country ? I waited too long on a brand new, blued kit barrel for $200 here on the forum. It was a match for my TC Hawken with a crappy bore. It seemed steep until I started thinking about...

The Traditions Kentucky and the P.A. Conical

They are killers Tim. I've shot them right over the powder for a bit of practice, but put a small cotton ball under a .50 card to keep the lube from fouling the powder when hunting. Accuracy is the same. I took 2 deer for my 1st ML season with them [last fall], and my grandson took another. Two...

Knight Red hot musket nipples work!

Good call gunpa. The Knight Red Hots were the cure for the TC Hawkens I have, when using Triple 7. Not to be confused with the vented, "Hot Shot" nipples, which did nothing for me with the TC's. They probably work well in other rifles though. SW

SOLD - Pending funds CVA Hawken Percussion rifle .50

If it is a 1in 48 I may be interested. If your cleaning rod does half a revolution in 24" it's a 48. Inquiring minds are interested. SW

Traditions Kentucky Rifle, really not a bad gun

Love the elegant simplicity of that sparker, kyron. I too, can easily see it in the hands of a trapper. I have 2 of the Traditions, cap lock Hawkens. One, a St. Louis kit done by a member here, the other a Woodsman. They are both extremely accurate. And very unfussy about ignition. I don't care...

SOLD - Pending funds New from Kit - T/C Hawken Barrel .50 cal

I thought kit barrels came in the white. This looks blued. Is that correct ? Thanks, SW

    Any info on this weapon

Well, if it is, ATF, Secret Service and Treasury will be in a race to 'expropriate" it from the present owner. "gun crimes" are rampant and this needs to be nipped in the bud. SW

    Dry ball removal

The "stealth method" is to have an extra rifle on hand and just, nonchalantly, act like you changed your mind about using the one you dry balled. Just say it doesn't feel right and you won't be lying. SW

    Shot today

I hope so too. And you better skip the Jeeper's Jamboree this year. That could really jar sumpin loose. My parents once lived in Georgetown. Big deal up there. Get better ! SW

    Conical help

Good call kyron. 70 grains of 2f, t-7 works great in my Traditions Woodsman as well. Same for the Hornady PA conical that weighs 240 grains [60 more than a round ball]. Remember, 85 grains 2f, t-7 is approximately equal to 100 grains of the real McCoy. Many here with experience believe [and I...

Does this look right to you ?

Leave it alone. It's a period Maine rain forest rifle. The file work is to drain off the rain water so the front sight doesn't get swamped. Common in coastal OR and WA as well. Check the underside of the barrel. It probably says Francis Marion. If it works, don't fix it. SW

Help me. I'm moving to Florida. My poor barrels!

Thanks Notchy. I guess with my limited BP experience, it's better to be lucky than good. But I did have to learn the hard way with unmentionables, and it did pay off. With smokeless firearms it seems like the rust shows up more on the outside than in the bore. With MLs, rust on the outside is...

Help me. I'm moving to Florida. My poor barrels!

I third the Breakfree Clp advice. I grew up with firearms in southern CA, 3 miles from the beach, and until I learned about Breakfree, rust was a constant battle. Just as important, no matter what you choose, never, ever store your firearms horizontally. There is a reason tradesmen hang tool...

Can powder brand be responsible for this much difference?

Good call. I know it isn't directly apples to apples, but I have extensive reloading experience with unmentionables over a chrony, and with no sight adjustment, higher velocity loads invariably strike lower on the target. Counter intuitive and it leads many without a chronograph to believe that...
