Derringer back from the dead. Completed.

Well, almost three months later I finally finished the CVA/Jukar Derringer rehab of the badly butchered kit I found in my late father-in-laws stuff. Numerous inlays in an attempt to fix crooked or oversize holes, overcut insets, etc. and I fluted the barrel flats to get rid of the serial...

    Derringer Front Sight Install

Sight has a post that presses into the hole. It's an old CVA Jukar kit that was in my late father in laws stuff. It was badly butchered.

    Derringer Front Sight Install

Hi guys, I'm working on a Derringer rehab and have a silly question... What's the easiest way to install the small front sight? Thought about tapping it in with a piece of oak dowel to avoid the top getting dented or flattened. Maybe an arbor press? I saw someone note these need soldered...

Birchwood Casey Stock Stock Sheen & Conditioner

Guys, I'm in my second go around with Tru-Oil on the Derringer stock I'm refinishing. I had about 5 coats on that were applied with a 1" foam brush. Even being sparing, runs developed and I was unsuccessful in smoothing them out with steel wool. With that, I stripped it down and have...

    Birchwood Casey Tru Oil question

Morning, I'm using Tru-Oil for the first time on the Derringer stock I am rehabbing. I'm on coat #3 and having good results with it smoothing out after each coat dries. Planning on maybe 5-6 coats and using 0000 steel wool between coats. Question is, if I want a matte finish as opposed to the...

    Stock almost done

What kind of material are you using for the wire inlays? Looks great!

    Flint Knapping

I used to do allot of it but only used obsidian which is available in my area.

    Stock Finishing Question

I just went out and stripped it off. I'll let it sit for a few days and then lightly sand it. It needed to be darker.

    Stock Finishing Question

I hit it with an initial coat of Tru Oil today. Not sure I like it and am now wishing I had stained it with a medium brown stain first. My guess is it's too late now.

    Derringer back from the dead

Decided to flute the barrel since one side had a serial number and 'Spain half sanded-off. You could only see the tops of the letters and numbers. I re-stamped the number on the bottom that will be under the stock. Turned out good. I'll paint infill the flutes black after I blue or brown the...

    Stock Finishing Question

I'm still chewing on whether to leave this one light or try leather die which I have a number of colors of. I was hoping to use a number of coats of pure tung oil to seal it.

    Derringer back from the dead

All the rounds were drilled with forstner bits and then plugged with contrasting wood. The two teardrop inlays were fitted by hand with carving chisels and a Dremel.

    Derringer back from the dead

It's been 20+ years since I've played with black powder or built any firearms. I built quite a few many moons back. I found part of an old CVA Derringer in a box of parts that was my late father-in-laws after he passed. It was pretty beat up and had been sitting on my bench for about 3 years...

    Help Fixing Up Inherited Muzzleloaders

Deer Creek has all the remaining parts inventory for the older CVA side lock rifles. They also have a section on their website containing parts breakdowns, manuals, schematics, etc. Hope that helps. I just found three CVA's in various states of disrepair from my late father in law. A...

Need some advice on Traditions Kentucky flintlock build

Pretty sure the Traditions kit is close to identical to the older CVA Kentucky kits. Deer Creek has all the remaining parts for the older CVA side lock guns before they switched to inline. My guess is they would have your barrel tenion if you can't get it from Traditions

    Beware of deer creek

I concur with Notchy Bob. I've placed three parts orders from them in the last month. All have shipped within a day. Not sure about their kit quality but they have been a great help on the phone and ship quick.

    Creative Ignition

During the current period where percussion caps appear to be hard to find and unreasonably expensive. My curiosity has me wondering... Has anybody tried a spent cap with a roll cap (from a kids cap gun) or two simply inserted? Not sure if they would have the fire required for consistent...
