    WANTED 20/ 62 flintlock smoothbore

Looking to get my 13 year old son his first muzzleloader, he really wants a 20/62 flintlock smoothbore with maybe a shorter barrel so it's easier for him to load. I have about $600 or so to spend, I know it's probably not enough but I figured I would see if anyone might have one they might be...

    Fairbanks/ Interior Ak. muzzleloaders

I've noticed there's a few of us here in the Fairbanks/ Interior area. Not sure if anyone is interested but thought it might be fun to get together with other black powder shooters at some point, maybe a day at the range or just get together and BS.

    Hornet Nest Wadding

I watched an old movie clip of Eskimo's hunting spring geese with black powder shotguns and they were using a wad of grass, shot, and another wad of grass over the shot. They were knocking them out of the sky pretty good! I imagine in the old days they used whatever worked....................

Max load for 62 cal smoothbore

Thanks for all the info, I have no hesitation for using it on black bears but have considered using it on a grizzly........with a back up shooter of course. Thought the extra umph might come in handy if I do decide to try.

Max load for 62 cal smoothbore

I have a Jackie Brown 62 smoothbore and the biggest load that I've used is 80 grains of FFG with a .600 patched ball. Was wondering what the max safe load would be?

shooting my fowler/smoothbore while totally ignorant

I don't know how others shoot their smoothbore but I look at it the same as shooting traditional archery without sights. Consistent form and solid anchor, and of course lots of practice till it becomes instinctive.

shooting my fowler/smoothbore while totally ignorant

I get the best accuracy out of mine with powder, over powder card, pre lubed wad, .10 patch and .600 ball. With 80 grains of 2f I can shoot it accurately at 75 yards. Never hurts to experiment though and find what your gun likes.........................

    Winter Shooting

Yes beaver mitts, caribou parka, and lynx hat. Funny you should say that about the " Bullseye " one of the elders from arctic village was telling me that they quit wearing the traditional parkas because after they started using rifles a few people got shot on accident. I only plan on using the...

    BP in Alaska

I would check with canadian authorities before trying rather than taking advice from a forum. HOWEVER just because the canadian authorities tell you it's all good doesn't mean that you won't be treated like a terrorist at the border. I learned this the hard way and I'll never travel through...

    Winter Shooting

Living in eastern interior Alaska sub zero is a normal day, that being said -30 is my usual cutoff to be out and about other than just working around the cabin. Like others have mentioned at temps colder than -30 things start to break and things that might not be to big a deal at 0 can be fatal...

    Pa.Flinty only season?

Many moons ago when I lived in Pa. we had a snow with a hard crust but instead of hunting deer we were hunting rabbit. You usually had to be quick on the trigger because they would go down groundhog holes but the holes were crusted up and we took quite a few rabbits until the crusty snow disapeared.

I have a question for the Smoothbore crowd

I shoot a 62 smoothbore with a 42" barrel. When I started shooting it I loaded it like a rifle with powder, patch, and ball and the accuracy was so so at 50 yards. I decided to try and load it like I do for shot with powder, over powder card, pre lubed wad, .10 patch and .600 ball. Now I can put...
