    Attaching pan on matchlock?

As Tob says, the usual method was dovetail, but I have for guns for my own use, used soft solder and never had a bit of bother with anything coming loose. We have to remember that the ribs of British shotguns were (and are) soft soldered in place, and stand a terrific amount of work with no...

    Ottoman Guns

Tob, On the previous page you mentioned the wheellock and cavalry use. Yes, indeed heavily used by cavalry, but I would suggest that the wheellock was first and foremost a hunting arm for those who could afford it. I believe it was an offshoot, or after thought, to get it into the hands of the...

    Ottoman Guns

A wheellock isn't something you could make in your back yard, so think they were wise enough to not try. I have heard that clock makers made at least some wheellock mechanisms, and probably there was a shortage of Ottoman clock makers. Pure conjecture again on my part!

Lengthening forcing cone to reduce cylinder gap, in revolver with integral barrel.

Thank you all for your valuable thoughts on this. With it being so rough and abused, I don't think collector value is there, but its the only one I have and would like it to work with a charge that made it practical for varmints here on the farm. The second hand barrel turned down sounds...

Lengthening forcing cone to reduce cylinder gap, in revolver with integral barrel.

Thanks to all for your replies, It seems there is some confusion about what I wrote. Please bear with me. I took up end shake with a washer at front of cylinder, as even a thin one at the rear of the cylinder messed with lock up timing. When I say lengthen forcing cone, I do not mean bore it...

Lengthening forcing cone to reduce cylinder gap, in revolver with integral barrel.

Thank you for your thoughts on this MDL, The liner sounds ideal if I could find someone up here to undertake it. Could do it myself if I can find a maker of pistol barrel liners I reckon. Would a liner be thick enough to make a decent forcing cone, (the extension part that would be free...

Lengthening forcing cone to reduce cylinder gap, in revolver with integral barrel.

Gents, My one and only revolver is an 1850 -odd British Tranter-Adams -Kerr. Its rough pitted and had been beat to death when I got it. Straightened it out, and the timing was still right on. Even with a rough bore, it shoots better groups than a lot of modern pistols and revolvers. Its only...

    Touch-Hole angle Question:

Deerstalker, No, if you put a pick in the touch-hole the pick points towards the Muzzle somewhat....Away from the shooter. Ok. I see now! You think I mean towards the muzzle on the Inside of the barrel, whereas I mean towards muzzle on the Outside!! LOL!

    Advantages/Disadvantages of 3f with Shot???

Brit, I can say that I am happy with conventional loads. Loads using coarser grain powder in the conventional manner. These have always worked for me. If they didn't I would look see what I could change to make them work. I have shot a lot of ducks, pheasants partridges and vermin with...

    Advantages/Disadvantages of 3f with Shot???

Brit, I believe Ian is talking about Pressure, not load. Thank you Walt.

    Touch-Hole angle Question:

Matchlock toradors quite often angled towards muzzle is my finding. (away from shooter) Had a few like that.

Walt, Up the page you show some dense little patterns. What range were they shot at ?

    Advantages/Disadvantages of 3f with Shot???

Old rule of thumb back in the UK that works well, is a dram (27 1/3 grains if nitpicking) for every half ounce of shot. so if an ounce is used in your 20 bore, try 55 grs. Yes, you can get more velocity, but also bugger your pattern. A straight cylinder should work out to 40 yards once you...

    Slow match diameter recomendation

My hemp twine works as well as I could wish. Bit thinner than most original, but sure fire and fast so I can't complain. it goes from a tad under a quarter inch to a bit over. Looks like the same stuff as Russell posted up the page.

    Carving antlers

Craig, Drawing can be harder than carving or scrimshaw, as there is not much resistance with a pencil, but when a graver is used, you can lean on it a bit and it steadies things up. Hope this helps my friend!

    India Torador Matchlock Wall Gun

Still Rick,, we see old musket barrels as I said earlier, found in old sheds and such and the bores are always better. (always seems an OK word in this case!) I have read how when a torador barrel was made, it went to the Rajah or whoever for inspection. Then with some instructions on how it...

    Carving antlers

Hank, Thank you for answering Craig. You did a lovely job on that flask! Craig, I must have mislead you. I own the horn with wheellock spanner yes, but have never owned a wheellock! That horn is an old one, but plain compared to some. Looking forward to the French pics!

    India Torador Matchlock Wall Gun

Tob, India goes from arid to steamy wet, but the damage is consistent it appears. It would be very interesting to see the bores of some of the guns taken back to England as souvenires after the mutiny, to see if they retained a good bore or not. The bores of the barrels from Oman are rough...

    Slow match diameter recomendation

I agree Bill. Good way to see if it's your thing or not! I used to get my hemp twine from Susan Wallace, but don't think they carry it now. It was chap and I have a couple of rolls. Of course for snapping or tinder-locks, its not used other than to light the tinder.
