What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Started stripping the finish off my Hawken stock. First time I've ever attempted this. I've stained stocks before but they were unfinished wood to begin with. Something new to try but taking it slow.

    Pietta 1858

I picked up a second black powder cylinder for mine from Cabela's. If nothing else, you can probably order one. I paid $60.00 +/- for the extra cylinder. Good luck. :thumb:

Rocks are more reliable than caps

You any good at making a bow and a quiver of arrows? The Indians seemed to get along with them just fine for hundreds/thousands of years.

    What was your first Muzzleloader?

A CVA Kentucky rifle kit, .45 cal. It looked interesting and I was looking for something new to do. That was in 1979 or 1980. My son still has it but shoots it infrequently. I have always wanted a .50 cal. Hawken so it's what I own and shoot now. By the way, if you still have your first...

Rocks are more reliable than caps

And you will find the guys that shoot unmentionables will thank both percussion cap and flintlock users for using what they have chosen to use. Leaves more for them, specially at 100 yards and beyond. (I no longer hunt) The Civil War might have been over sooner if they had just used flintlocks...

People overestimate how often percussion revolvers were reloaded...

I load my cylinder once on any given outing. I guess I should say I load both cylinders once each on any given outing (to the range). I take two loaded cylinders, minus the caps, whenever I go. I have one of those pistol reloading stands where you can load the whole cylinder more quickly if I...

    TC Hawken stock re-finish

I would like to do a similar project with my Hawken. The finish looks like plastic and although beautiful, I would love to make it look a little more authentic. What stripper do you use to get down to the base wood? I would prefer to do as little sanding as possible as I know it can ruin the...

Hello from off the grid in the Kentucky Hills...

Welcome from Idaho. I am green with envy, your own range. I have to drive 20 minutes to get to our club's range.

    Rifle Purchase

Since you've already purchased it, take it out and shoot it and give us your opinion on it. It looks like a beautiful rifle. Best of luck and above all, have fun. 👍

    Adjusting set triggers

I have a similar problem, the front trigger on my Hawken seems to be able to go off in a slight breeze. The idea of just using the front trigger is very appealing. I know why I never thought of it, it's too easy. 🙃 It comes with trying to overthink everything, thanks for the suggestion(s).

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Went to the range today. It would have been perfect except for one, stinking hang fire. I picked up a clip on iris for my glasses. It really works. It helped with all my open sight firearms from a bench rest position. Still working on using it off hand.

    black powder wood splitting wedge

Pretty cool. Having fun splitting wood and getting a daily dose of black powder smoke. Having said that, I'd rather do it in the field or at the range. However..................illegal in California. Illegal in California is a motto on the back of a T-shirt I wear on occasion. The T-shirt is...

New .44 cal. BP wadcutter bullet

On the left are the hollow point bullets as opposed to the ones on the right that were posted. It looks like they are offering two types of bullets. Both look interesting.

    "WHITE WOMEN AND WHISKEY" REALLY?"

Most snow we've had amounted to about 9 inches standing in 2017. Our elevation is only 2600 ft. above sea level so we don't get a lot of standing snow, it usually is gone in 2 or 3 days. I bought the plow in 2018 and have only used it twice since then. There is a real art to using a snow plow...

Problems I have had with, and thoughts on Pedersolis I have owned .

I have a percussion Traditional Hawken Target Rifle in .50 cal.. My biggest problem has been to keep the flash channel clear. Other than that, I found a great load and I enjoy shooting it.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Went to the Nampa gun show today. I was able to score 1 tin (100) of #11 CCI percussion caps and I found this. I've read how people really like this so I paid an arm and a leg for it but I wanted to try it out. They had one pound of Schutzen(sp?) and wanted $80.00 for it. I was able to get...

    Tap or not (powder measure)?

I carefully pour into the measure. Black powder is measured by volume, not weight. I would never weigh the charge but if I chose to tap the measure, I would do it the same every time. Consistency is the key. JMHO.
