What's the purpose of this screw on my TC flintlock

I am glad most of you seen the crack, I spotted it right off and it needs fixed or there will be a face full of barrel.

How long would you go when using spit patches without concern?

Since anything on a patch is to soften fouling when loading after a shot, it should make no difference before but a dry patch might be mighty hard to load even in a clean bore and could tear the cloth.

    Birchwood Caseys Perma Blue

I used the new creme Oxpho Blue on 2 old shotguns and they look like hot blue. wears very well.

    BALLISTOL a fair shake

I can tell the yung uns here, when old as me the smeller doesnt work as good so Ballistol smells better! However even with the mineral oil, Ballistol will desolve BP fouling just fine.

    Too small balls

It is very hard to measure ID with calipers.

    Rifle plug removal, field removal

NEVER remove a breechplug! Some are a real crush fit anyway.

Is there a lube for shooting conicals?

I bought SPG for my BPCR and the end of the barrel fouled so bad a damp patch wou;d not go through. I put it on my table at a shoot hoping to sell it, no takers so I put a free sign on it. I wound up bringing it home.

Storing black powder in a shed

I knew a guy that was scared of BP and kept his cans out in the weather on a picnic table, well you can guess how metal cans fared.

Storing black powder in a shed

I believe the Fed requirement for storage is 5# or less, any more and a remote bunker is needed.

Mold size question for .40 cal

It all depends on groove depth. Good rifling is .010 deep so a larger ball is needed. I remember Wes Kindig measuring my bore and selling me a bore size mold. Some barrels will just not take what the old Douglas barrels would.

Kaido Ojamaa's 255 conical and the ROA

I can see if a measure throws different charges. I scale check mine with FFG or for the revolvers, FFFG and they throw the right weights. 41 gr of Swiss FFFG is the max so the ball is just below the cylinder front of the Ruger. It would work with 777 but it would need compressed and give wild...

ADDING SOLDER TO LEAD FOR ROUND BALL CASTING

No tin is needed at all. tin has little hardening affect but you do not need any, Just pure lead.

    Casting Help!

All good suggestions except there are a few things. Lead does not fume at the temps we use but any dry dross is not to be breathed. A drop of water on the durface will only boil off but water under the surface will blow out lead as it turns to steam. A drop of sweat will do zero. I have cast...

54 caliber, not so odd any more?

I have taken over 150 deer with my .45 flintlock but I love my .54 Hawken because deer are DRT.

    .54 Woodsrunner suggestions

My 54 has an H&H barrel and I use Pyrodex RS in it. 100 gr measure, .535 ball and .020 patch. This has punched one hole groups at 50 yards. With 120 gr I could hit steel chickens at 200 meters.

What is the deal with the fouling ring

Long ago Bill Large told me a Patch will shoot a bore smooth and accuracy will go away. Old timers would etch a bore over night will vinegar or urine. All you need do is to get rid of sharp edges on the lands. Shooting will do it. Many say cut patches but most times it is lack of a seal because...

Kaido Ojamaa's 255 conical and the ROA

An alloy of lead like WW's will cast larger. Stay with pure lead. I hunt with my OA and use a pure ball with 41 gr of Swiss FFFG for 1102 fps and it kills deer as good as any other gun but is not accurate at 50 because the twist is wrong for a rb. Since a conical is longer I don't know how in...

Is chain fire more likely from the front end with ball or conical bullet ?

I don't know how many have seen what the hammer does but videos have shown that ALL guns will have the hammers blown back, we have seen them reach full **** from the pressure. Even modern bolt actions will have the firing pin forced to the rear. My experience with C&B was a chainfire from the...
