SOLD TC Hawkens with 50 caliber 1:66 twist Green Mountain barrel

A friend bought a TC with the easy stary barrel and rifling was .003". Nothing would shoot, no powder, ball, patch, lube or maxi would shoot. After 2 weeks of testing we gave up. It was a good shotgun but no shot charge, one at a time. Now my old original TC was a tack driver.

This years deer season is off to a good start

Very nice and I am also a doe shooter. We had a few cool nights but I didn't get out with the crossbow. ML is later for us. I hate to butcher right away so I like it to get colder.

    Black walnuts

I never seen so many. I have picked up a few million from my yard, also the woods is full of acorns and hickery. But almost no squirrels. It was so dry for a long time I think most moved closer to water. I started a bucket of walnut stain since my can is almost empty.

    Strengthening frizzen spring?

It seems the range is from 572 to 932 so I guess you are correct. I suppose it depends on application. I made new main springs and frizzen springs from o-1 after mine broke and they still work after 65 years. For my cherries I make to cut molds I temper at 300.

Is there an issue pulling a RB that is not a tight fit?

The ball pullers I seen sold have huge screws so I make my own with very skinny wood screws. They do not enlarge the ball as much.

    Strengthening frizzen spring?

Seems to me that spring temper is 600 degrees, anyway that is what I set my lead pot at.

    Leaving Rifle Loaded

I leave mine in the garage and have no problems.

    Fitting stock to shooter

At 5-10 I use 13-1/2" or I can't shou;der the rifle tight. Drop at comb are measurements from a rifle that allows sight alignment without searching. Measured from a modern shotgun. I sold my TC Hawken because it never fit. Made for the Anonocki Iguess. You have to figure in hunting clothes.

    2023 Fall Squirrel Season...........

Grays wine like a cat so old timers called them cat squirrels.

    Damaged GPR barrel

I seen the problem right off---it is that stuff called WD40! It can actually cause rust but if it is not rust it is dried WD40. It will leave a build up that nothing will desolve. I have seen firing pins so frozen in they had to be pounded out and everything cleaned mechanically. The best use of...

Frozen hunts, fowling shots, spit patch

I like Young Country but mink oil is also great. I remember years ago hunting in PA late season, I had bore butter in a tube and could not squeeze it out unless I put the tube under my truck wheel. I do not like to use spit as I might track deer all day and worry about rust.

    2023 Fall Squirrel Season...........

We are going out this afternoon. I only see gray squirrels but a neighbor caught a fox squirrel in her attic so I released it in my woods but I have never seen one here in the wild. Back in northern Ohio we had just fox and had to go south th find grays. I sure miss the big ones.

Height adjustment change for peep sight

,0810 is correct but that is a tad over 5/64", that being .0781. Using a good caliper can set the sight but so can just shooting the rifle.

    Rust...

50-50 anti freeze and water also works without rusting.

Performance difference between Goex & Swiss powder ?

I made the mistake of shooting the same load of Swiss out of my light .45 flinter as I use with Goex. First time I had a black and blue shoulder and I have shot some real hard kickers over the years.

    Mass produced flintlocks

I remember when a quarter was worth almost $1 and I had few quarters. Making $1.25 an hour was doing well. I would go into the Log Cabin when Wes and Dan Kindig were there. They had boxes and boxes of parts. I would pick out what I thought would fit and make a flintlock lock by hand. Here it is...
