    Another "dragoon" type pistol

Pulled the pistol back apart today to start putting finish on the stock. While that was drying, I soldered a rough shaped sterling silver front sight on the barrel. (Unlike most smooth bore Dragoons, this one is rifled so I did add a rear and front sight.)

    Another "dragoon" type pistol

Stained the wood.....just did a quick assembly to see how it will look.

    Another "dragoon" type pistol

Been up to my ....well....how about belly button.... in aerospace work lately but I had a few minutes to make the ram rod for the Dragoon. Many years ago I purchased a Michael Lea tool to turn square stock round or round stock to a smaller diameter. I had never had a chance to use it....until...

    Another "dragoon" type pistol

Birddog, Here is a little more detail from my post about building a little (scaled down) rifle for my grandson. I think it will explain how the thumb piece is retained....the attaching screw goes through the wrist of the stock and the head is covered by the trigger guard. Hope this helps...

Antique Cannon Construction - Sage Advice Needed

Two piece molds had been used for centuries before 1858. Most of the field guns made and used during the US Civil War were cast guns. However about that time cannon began to be manufactured with shrunk on wrought iron reinforcements around the breach area. Look up Parrot and Dahlgren guns and...

Antique Cannon Construction - Sage Advice Needed

DavidGH, Cannons have been made by all sorts of methods since their introduction in Europe in the middle ages. However, in regard to cast cannons (bronze or iron) there were two primary methods used. Early on a wooden pattern was used to start and then an iron frame and mud / clay, two part...

All the other "stuff" to go with the little rifle...

Traveling at the moment but had a chance to start a few other items I am considering putting in the wood case along with the little rifle..... Ebony short starter (the ram rod is only 1/4 inch in diameter so this seemed a prudent accessory)..... Oil bottle..... .32 caliber bullet board...

    Another "dragoon" type pistol

Well....don't let the pictures fool you. I am just now (at 69 years old) catching up to what an average 14 year old 18th century gunsmith's apprentice could do....and, I'm sure, he could do it all much faster and better...;)

    Another "dragoon" type pistol

Lock is installed, but I want to rework the trigger a little. Only need to make a ramrod and install a front sight after I polish the barrel. Then stain and finish....

    Another "dragoon" type pistol

OK....so I finally had a chance to re-work the main spring and then make all the screws so I could finish assembling this lock. Got it all done, hardened the tumbler, sear, and frizzen....put it all back together....and it works ! Now it shouldn't take long to inlet the lock parts and finish...

All the other "stuff" to go with the little rifle...

Finished up the spout stopper and the base plug. As usual for me, I threaded the base plug and made the cascabel removable for filling the horn. Although most of these that I make have wooden male threads, this one has a brass threaded sleeve and a hickory core. This was to strengthen the...

    Who else shoots BIG bore?

I built a 4 gage blunderbuss with a modified Ed Rayl brass barrel several years ago. I shoot it with a "handful" of powder, a wad of paper towel, a "handful" of shot (any size will do), and another paper towel over-shot wad. I also shoot what I call an AP round (Armor Piercing...not really...

All the other "stuff" to go with the little rifle...

Trying to get all the parts of the powder horn done and then decide whether to mount the horn with silver or not...and then what to engrave on the horn....so many decisions... Cutting out a piece of ebony for the base plug..... Turning the plug on the lathe. This will have a threaded...

All the other "stuff" to go with the little rifle...

OK....so the little rifle for my grandson is finished.... A Tale of Two Little Rifles .......Now I need to make all the "stuff" that needs to go with it and a wood rifle case. Today I started with trying to decide on a powder horn that is in keeping with the scale of the rifle. I had...

A Tale of Two Little Rifles

OK....now I have to start on all the other "stuff" that needs to go into the wood case I am building for the rifle. I will pick up that thread over in the "Craftsman" forum....;)

A Tale of Two Little Rifles

Oh by the way....here is a picture of me shouldering the little rifle. To get my head down to the sight plane I need to get my "snot locker" almost jammed into the trigger guard....and I will probably loose some eyebrow hair when the pan ignites. The pull is only 10 5/8 inches. Nonetheless...

A Tale of Two Little Rifles

OK....so I thought I was done with this rifle but the more I looked at the "finished" little rifle the less I liked the browned barrel.....don't know why. It just didn't look that good on this one. So I removed almost all of the brown with 320 paper and then blued the barrel. Since I had not...

A Tale of Two Little Rifles

Finally finished......a long road on this one.....but finally done....well....except for the case and the accoutrements.... :) To show scale again....one of my full size rifles and this little one...... This also gives a sense of how slender the wrist is........ More photos....sorry for...

A Tale of Two Little Rifles

Working for a living has been getting in the way of progress here.....yet again ! I have been out at my Mojave Desert rocket test facility for many days and have not had a chance to try to get this little rifle finished finally (or work on the many other irons that I have in the fire). But the...
