    A different breech plug.

I'd use a manual impact driver with the correct size bit. That is what they are made for, an application such as this

    Quality 1/16 drill bits

Drill presses have step pulley configurations that make them adjustable for the speed required.

A butt plate tip from an old fart for new builders (not kits)

One thing I learned after struggling with the first few butt plates is to chisel out a hollow in the center of the butt, I leave about 3/8 or 1/2 inch around the edge of the stock. This gives you a whole a lot less wood to get flat and makes it easier to get started straight. I make a paper...

    Quality 1/16 drill bits

I doubt if your problem is the quality of your drill bits,I'd bet it's your technique. If you are using a hand drill, start out slow, once the drill begins to cut, increase your speed. 1/16 drill bits require a solid set up and a steady hand. A drill press and a rigid set up makes this job much...

Have you built a knife using a circular saw blade?.

Good rule of thumb is if it has carbide tips it's mild steel, not knife material. Best test is to takes a piece of the saw blade, put in a vice and hit it with a hammer. If it snaps off clean it will make a knife. If it bends keep looking.

    Mainspring edge hitting barrel

This is what I do. Commonly seen on original rifles, usually does not take much to get the spring to clear.

Where can you find brass slotted flathead woodscrews ?

I would not use brass either, it is incorrect and they bugger up too easily. You can buy slotted steel screws just about anywhere. They are cadmium plated which is easily removed by a soak in Citric Acid. Citric Acid is readily available for cheap at your local Wally World in the canning...

    Peep Hole Height?

This is the way I did it on a few guns and crossbows and it worked well. Get you a thin piece of sheet metal or brass. Measure the height of your rear sight from the barrel to the bottom of the Vee, Bend the sheet metal into a ninety degree angle and drill a 1/8 inch hole for your aperture at...

    Thoughts on this knife

This is an interesting thread. Since we are discussing South American knives I want to post this picture. This is a Brazilian muladero, a Brazilian cowboy. He carries a similar knife in a very unusual sheath. Has anyone seen this before? Anyone have an idea why this would be practical? I have...

60-cal Lever Matchlock Arquebus - WHO made it & WHEN?

That pan set up is pure genius, I wish I had seen this before I built my matchlock. Who ever built this gun was very skilled. You can bet this wasn't his first rodeo. Nice score!

carving name on barrel, how to?

Yes, it's pretty hard, not something you are going to be able to do without much practice and study. There is another option, you can etch her name on the rifle. I did this one with a battery charger and salt water. Google salt water etching, With a little practise you can do a nice signature...

    Vinegar and steel wool stain

Vinegaroon reacts with the Tannin in the wood. It brings out the curl . Woods such as Beech have very little to no curl so Vinegaroon or Aqua Fortis for that matter, won't have much of an effect on Beech. I have had very good results with Vinegaroon, I prefer it over Aqua Fortis. I make my...
