    Unplugging patent breech? Loaded rifle…

Have one of those as well. A Moore and Harris that has basically been shot apart. Stock is split between the locks, barrel ends are razor thin, checkering is worn to just shallow lines… It’s at the local history museum, which was built on the shotgun owner’s property. Confederate veteran, state...

    Percussion Caps Found

Found them in, of all places, Bartlett in Shelby County. Would not have stopped, but a little voice in the back of my head would not let up…

    Percussion Caps Found

Bass Pro yesterday had Remington #10s at $13.99/each. Walmart had 8 packs of standard CCI #11s. Picked up 4 tins at $5.62/each. Texted a friend who hunts with a .50 to go get the rest. Took me to roughly 1100 10/11 total. With our 3 antlerless per day bag limit, at 2.5 months ML/modern combined...

    Unplugging patent breech? Loaded rifle…

Actually used a blackpowder solvent. Some Ballistol product (labeled) that is in reality a cheap Chicom knock off. Wife picked it up with a .50 cleaning kit and patches.

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

Tested it with both round ball and 230gr .45acp cast bullets. Both will kill, but the ball is more accurate. The ROA is my close quarters brush gun. If I absolutely “have” to fill the freezer, the ROA is relegated to back up status. 12-16-20g slugs, 7.62x39, .50 or .54 round ball, or 12g...

How do you prep your C&B revolver for an outing?

Nothing special. 3F Swiss or T7, .457 ball, swipe of T17 or Bore Butter over the cylinder mouths. Whatever caps I grab that fit the nipples tight. Couple drips of pure beeswax over the caps, have friends who keep hives around, so free wax. Or same powder, .452 230gr pistol bullet, rest is the...

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

My ROA is most accurate with .457 round ball loads. 25-35gr for paper punching. It also likes 230gr lead round nose .452 meant for SASS Wild Bunch .45acp shooting. 30-35gr of 3F Swiss or T7, whatever commercial lube is on the bullets, scant wipe of T17 or Bore Butter over the cylinder mouth...

Brace of Dueling Pistols Need Info.

Eibar has been making firearms since the matchlock days. Very common cottage industry in Basque communities.

Shot the old Lyman 54 some yesterday

Don’t see any reason why not. This is an “on duty” week for me, M/T and F/S/S, only off T/W. State l.e.o. Next week is the opposite schedule. Trying to get the front yards prepped for Halloween. But should be here most days off barring doctor appointments.

Shot the old Lyman 54 some yesterday

Medically discharged in Aug 96, copper napthanate inhalation. I was 24… We’re east of Hwy 14, county line runs along a pasture/garden edge. Couple miles from the old Dunlap Orphanage. Old plantation, 1792 land grant.

Has anyone tried to make Wedge keys for barrels?

I have all those tools, and a blasting cap box full of good smithing coke. And will still buy new wedges if needed. My discounted labor rate of $25/hr still makes a hand forged barrel wedge/key a $100 part.

Shot the old Lyman 54 some yesterday

Same area I’m in… Farm is on the Tipton/Shelby line. I’ve found 90gr of 3F Swiss or T7 is sufficient. Same poi as 120gr 2F subs. For my .54 GPR, 90gr powder, t-shirt patch, T17 lube over the patch, .530 swaged Hornady ball, CCI #11 magnum cap. Barrel is sooty, but not fouled out. Putting the...

    Nipple replacement

My GPR has a nice shiny silver nipple. Rifle is a 1990, so would assume it has been swapped at some point. No issues going bang with the apparently stainless steel nipple. Next time it needs replacing, will likely convert it for musket caps. Easier to cap than #11s with arthritic fingers.

    How do you hold?

Either B or like Hatchet Jack’s for my flat topped rear sight guns. Both front stuffers get 90gr 3F Swiss or T7. They shoot both powders to POA consistently. Both are sighted in at 60yds currently, as bifocals make longer shots on live targets iffy. I tend to catch the divider line in my lens...

    Confederate revolver, true or fake

There is a verified CSA NMA in a display case at our local museum. It’s rough as a dried out ear of popcorn. Can’t touch it without gloves, not to preserve the gun, but to not get “images” off it. I have a captured Union New Testament from the Battle of Atlanta. Same display case, on open ended...

    Spiller and Burr sources?

Might just have to run up to DGW. Haven’t been in years, don’t like driving through Dyersburg TN.

Who Hunts Reg Seasons With Their Muzzleloader?

That will be me this year. Old pecan orchards that have been 50% reclaimed by nature. The last couple years have hunted with a Ruger Old Army or a 4” .44Spl N frame. Taking the .54 GPR this year for the front orchards. I still have 2 centerfire rifles, but they are for hogs (7.62x39) and bipedal...

    Revolver Grips

Any SBH grips should fit. My oem brass dragoon gripframed ROA (1972) has an unmarked set of SBH rosewood grip scales. As heavy as I run it, thinking about having them checkered. Cylinder was cut deeper by the previous owner, 40gr of 3F Swiss or T7, measure tapped and topped until it can’t hold...

    Loading technique for hunting

Just cheap 100% cotton patch, T17 and old thread. Little dollar store box. They smell like toothpaste and wet wool, with hints of soggy dog. Look awful, fit a hair loose, shoot fine.

    Spiller and Burr sources?

I know Traditions had/has them in blister packs. DGW sometimes has good to go or kit versions. Is there a reliable source for them? I need at least a pair of functional S&B replicas. Also looking for Leach and Rigdon functional replicas. I shoot in the Memphis area. Live in a plantation house...
