What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Found my new cleaning kit, the .50 is about to get a good scrubbing. Bought some more 1/16” drill bits, the .50 is getting linoleum nails instead of checkering. Can’t find my borescope, so even though popping caps did not touch anything off, don’t trust that the .54 is unloaded. These guns will...

    Hawk identification?

Came from the friend that left me his rifles. Not sure what he was cutting that got it so funky. Hand forged head, marked with a 3 and a 1 over a J. Came from a muzzleloading shop in Puyallup WA, or from the Paul Bunyan Rifle Range, also in Puyallup WA. I’m going to clean it up, get the head...

    How heavy is too heavy?

Man that’s a beautiful beast of a rifle. 35 years ago, I would take my great grandfather’s .45 fossils hunting. Infantry model Trapdoor Springfield and a longest barrel offered 1876 Winchester. Now at 52 with severe lumbar damage, rotten knees-shoulders-right hip, a 9# GPR is about my limit for...

    Help with year and twist

Made my own in college. Worked okay for paper punching with a “horse” pistol. The problem with making your own now is getting ingredients. And then screening it. No pun intended, but bite the bullet and pay the hazmat fees. I can still buy it from 1 semi-local shop, occasionally. Stocks it for...

    Nose cap refitting?

Am going to refinish the stock after deer season. Correct a few areas with poor wood to metal fit, like the trigger guard and tang. If the cap needed adjusting, it as well. I know that the GPR and TC Hawkens were built as working guns. The original owner of both mine hunted with both of them...

    Nose cap refitting?

Nose cap no, ramrod entry pipe yes. The rifle a few poorly fit components but shot fine last time it was used. Another member compared my pics in another thread to his GPR, same year of manufacture, same fit issues, same accuracy (really decent).

    Think it’s ready, .54 GPR

No need to take pics. I appreciate your looking over mine.

    Nose cap refitting?

Both of my plains rifles have a gap of 1/16-3/16” between the stock and the cap body. The cap “wings” fit perfectly, but the gap looks like a serious weak spot. Do I just carve the “wing” relief back farther? Epoxy fill the gap? This is the pinned “better” fitting. The brass TC with screws is...

    Alpha gal strikes again!

Was just about over it. WAS… The Lone Star Ticks were bad in southwest Tennessee this year. Yep, ramped back up. Already tired of poultry and seafood. Fried catfish is a veggie side, like onion rings, not the protein…

    Think it’s ready, .54 GPR

And it still has less nose cap to stock gap the my .50 TC Hawken…

    Think it’s ready, .54 GPR

Oh, both keys fit sloppy in the escutcheos with the barrel removed. Both fit cleanly in the barrel lugs with the stock removed. Assembled? Tap out, tap in. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Think it’s ready, .54 GPR

I’m still planning to smooth it up. Probably scrape and the tung oil the stock, after the inletting issues are fixed. Tung oil most likely, Tru Oil and Tung blend last 3 coats. No dyes or bleaches.

    Think it’s ready, .54 GPR

Last, I think… Barrel keys were short up front, longer rear. Buttplate screws sit proud/crooked, and there is daylight “just” visible between metal/wood in the curved section. Not the best pics, hopefully shows the fitment issues.

    Think it’s ready, .54 GPR

I’ll try to get some photos Monday, have to work Sunday (corrections officer). Barrel has all of the “word salad” and proofmarks of a factory assembled. My horse pistol kit just had caliber, but actual production date was unknown. Thanks for the assists so far. Have had the rifle since 3/23...

    Tang screw"s" & torque

Was going to use wood hardener there, around/under the keys, and under the butt plate of a Lyman GPR. And in any thin sections of the barrel channel. Did that to a 75 year old Mossberg .22 and an at the newest 114 year old Davenport 12g. Neither shoot any better, but the factory screws seem to...

    Think it’s ready, .54 GPR

Rifle was an absolute tack driver the last time I shot it. 100gr of 2F, .530, commercial prelubed patches. It than sat in my friend’s gun cabinet for 10 years, untouched. He always said that both it and the .50 TC were factory guns. He wasn’t a hunter or fisherman, rarely shot his modern CF...

    Think it’s ready, .54 GPR

Don’t fit… 10s go right on, seat fully. 11s are too little. Unless the tins were mismarked? CCI and Remington.
