    Think it’s ready, .54 GPR

I had never seen them, thought “Why not”? Something new to tinker with.

    Think it’s ready, .54 GPR

Yes, 1990 date coded Lyman GPR. I’ll have to take it outside for any pictures. In a nut shell, the wedge estucheons are lower then the wood up top, higher than the wood along their lower edges. Tang metal is lower than the surrounding wood. With the barrel pulled, there is 1/16 of an inch...

    Think it’s ready, .54 GPR

    2013, not 2023, he passed 3-2-23.

    Think it’s ready, .54 GPR

The rifle is 34 years old. I’d bet it has less than 100 loads through it. Last time I shot it was in 2023, when my riding buddy still owned it. Tack driver, from 20-120yds. If I fill and redrill, won’t I have to lengthen the nose cap stock reliefs? Those are a nearly perfect fit to the cap...

    Think it’s ready, .54 GPR

Other than scoping the bore, have gone over the gun with a fine tooth comb. 1. Barrel wedges were in from the off side, switched them to the lock side. Tried fliping them over, changing slots, they have to be tapped in or out. Will fix after deer season, finish inletting so the estutcheons are...

Kaido Ojamaa's 255 conical and the ROA

Have only been tinkering with an ROA for about 12 years. Blued 7.5” barrel, deepend cylinder by previous owner, brass SBH “Dragoon” grip frame with smooth rosewood grip scales. Round ball I use swaged Hornady .457 over a wool wad and 35-45gr of 3F powder. Or 15gr loose 3F powder and a 30gr...

    Why are smokepoles so awesome?

Started shooting at age 10, 42 years ago. Started hunting at 12. Burned out on long distance shooting by 18. Made the “mistake” of digging out my greatgrandfather’s BP cartridge rifles and surplus ammunition in high school. 1873 Trapdoor .45/70 and 1876 Winchester .45/60, both with pre-1930s...

    New Arkansas Reg: “Alternative weapons”

I don’t bother to hunt AR, even though we have property there. Deer season in TN opens in Sept, closes in Jan. Archery, muzzleloader, modern. In our unit, we can hunt all 3 seasons. Bag limit is 3 antlerless per day, plus 2 antlered for the year. Since we are farming, no license required. I’m...

    Hello from sw TN

Thanks! Going to possibly inlet the TC’s wedge escutcheons, correct some proud wood and high brass spots. Those were on my friend’s “wish list” to have done to it. I may just add his info and call it good. The barrel to ramrod web is pretty thin…

Got #11 CCI caps in Walmart today

Only finding inline 209 caps in sw Tenn. Which would be alright if I liked shooting scoped bolt actions in a plastic stock. Literally gave away a Savage Axis .308 to the young family that hunts my farm. I’ll stick to a shotgun, revolver or front stuffer.

    Hello from sw TN

Long time reader, decided it was time to join up. Been shooting for 42 years. Currently have a first year Ruger Old Army with the brass SBH “Dragoon” grip frame, 1990 Lyman GPR .54, and a year unknown 400,000s serialed TC “Hawken” .50, and a ton of unmentionables. No manuals for the cap guns...
