    Brown Bess kit

I built the TOTW Long Land Bess kit, including the lock. It was the first lock I built from a set of castings so I had to do a lot of research to find out how to perform the heat treating steps for the mainspring, frizzen and bridle. That was almost 10 years ago. I believe the lock today comes...

    Mule Ear locks

I was interested in mule ear locks, but couldn't find one to buy. When L&R introduced one a few years ago, I jumped on it without even knowing what I would build around it. I thought its shape lent itself to a Bedford style longrifle. I picked up a precarved Bedford stock from Tiger Hunt at...

Looking at replacing a Bess stock

Sorry to say you have only two options for an Indian made Bess - repair or restock from scratch. I checked with Dunlap when I bought a beat up Miroku Bess at auction and found out their replacement stocks fit only Pedersoli parts. I bought a nice walnut blank from a forum member plus the correct...

    Jim Chambers kits

I built the Chambers English Fowler/Officer's fusil and I am very pleased with the finished product. The components are first rate. One of the best kits I have put together. Carefully read BJH's excellent description (above) of the various operations required to build the kit. It is spot on. At...

    Musket Caps

I compete almost exclusively with flintlocks - both smoothbore and rifle. I did, however, win the 2016 Maine State Championship Military Musket match using the Parker Hale 1861 musketoon. Pretty sure I would have used RWS caps during a competitive event. Anyway, if all you're doing is informal...

    Musket Caps

RWS musket caps are my strong preference for my Shiloh 1863 carbine, Parker Hale Enfield musketoon, and Euroarms Enfield 1858 two-bander, but FWIW I have shot two tins of the CCI re-enactor caps with no problems what so ever. I was puzzled when posts started appearing on this and the NSSA forum...

    It's not a group...it's so bad it's not even a shotgun pattern....I need help.

Are your minie balls molded from pure lead? Only pure lead is soft enough to ensure proper expansion of the skirt when the rifle is fired. I shoot 45 grains of 3F GOEX in my Euroarms 2 band Enfield using the same bullet shown in your photo. I'm not sure if Pyrodex generates enough pressure fast...

    Large caliber

I have two .54 caliber flintlocks that I shoot a lot in various competitions. The .54 is nice when it's windy.

    Roundballs in a Sharps

Before I managed to find a Rapine Christmas tree mold, I tried shooting .545 round balls in my Shiloh New Model 1863 Sharps. I didn't use a paper cartridge. With the muzzle pointing down I just dropped the loose ball into the chamber and poured loose powder in behind. Results were disappointing...

Using a lubed cushion wad for both PRB and shot?

When I started with my first smoothbore, I tried a fiber wad on top of the powder and a Wonder lube patched round ball. Now I use neatsfoot oil for the patch lube and no fiber wad. I agree with Britsmoothy. I don't think Wonder Lube works very well as a lube.

    Priming with 3F

I use one of the round brass pan primers with the plunger tip. Works just as well with 3F as it does with 4F. The key is to disassemble and clean it on a regular basis otherwise the plunger spout will stop working.

    Load data for 45 cal

I shoot a .440 ball with a .018 pocket drill patch lubed with jojoba oil and 55 grains of 3f from a Green Mountain barrel.

Could someone tell me what they think this is?

No, it is not suitable for a muzzleloading barrel, only breechloaders. The brass bristles are designed to be pushed only. When you push this type of brush down to the breech and then reverse it to pull it out, the bristles can jamb it fast or damage the bore. Instead use OOOO steel wool on a...

    Which powder?

The synthetic powders will work in percussion guns but I urge you to use real black powder. I don't know about the other synthetics but Pyrodex is a perchlorate based powder which makes it highly corrosive. Even an immediate cleaning does not totally eliminate the damage.

    Which powder

Yes, 3F should work fine in your .50 caliber. That is what most people use. I have two .50 caliber flintlock rifles, one with a Green Mountain barrel, the other with a Colerain. The Colerain barrel shoots best with 3F. The Green Mountain rifle shoots best with 2F. Start with 3F and if you're...

Lead Hardness for Cap and Ball Conicals

FWIW I have a Remington 1858 New Army and unless I use the purest lead available, I cannot start my cast projectiles into the chambers. My brother gave me some ingots of lead recovered from the backstop at his gun club but the balls I cast from it were too hard to conform to the chamber mouths...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I completed the final fitting of the lock on an India Pattern Bess that I'm restocking. It's a repro I bought from a former re-enactor. Shoots great, but the tropical hardwood stock it came with bugged me. I picked up a nice walnut blank several years ago and I'm finally getting around to...

    Working brass.

I believe this is true. The first muzzleloading book I ever bought described a barrel browning process used in the late 1700's that employed a solution of iron filings dissolved in urine. I once discussed this process with a friend who has repaired and restored original New England fowlers and...

    RE Davis locks

My most recent build is a Jaeger rifle. It has the R E Davis Jaeger lock on it. I haven't had a chance to shoot it much, but I'm very impressed with the lock. It sparks well and the French amber flints show no signs of abuse plus the frizzen shows no signs of scoring. The lock geometry and...
