    Bare balls in the backwoods

Rag paper was used but expensive to make and probably not that available in the frontier areas. I would guess wasp nest and tow fiber would have been in common use. LBL

    Flintlock Snobbery

Use 2F as charge and prime in my FDC and it fires every time if my flint is sharp and vent is cleared ! You learn what it takes to get reliable service from a flintlock pretty quickly. LBL

Tracks Fusil De Chasse In 58cal rifled barrel. Anyone have experience with one?

Would like feedback on weight and handling of the finished kit gun.. LBL

    Ahhhh....the good ol Days !!

My first can of BP for a brass frame G & G replica was Dupont 3f. it cost 3.00 in 1969 and the price had gone up .50 when I went back for 2f for my new Remigton Zouve rifle musket a few months later. Started me down the ML path and I have stayed with it! LBL

    Who Used Fowlers?

Kaskaskia was part of French Colonial territory until the early 1760s when the English took over French Canada. I believe there would have been many smoothbore French hunting guns in the area as most trapping and hunting was done by the french settlers. LBL

    Who Used Fowlers?

I grew up in New England and was influenced by the Davey Crocket craze. I had no idea that the rifle was never used in the north eastern areas until long after the Revolutionary War. In the last five years I have found a lot of New England frontier history that was influenced by the use of the...

Progress is a 2 1/2 inch group with a flyer!

Thanks for your encouragement. I can tell it is going to be a quest every time I shoot and don't do as well as I did the previous session. Today I was in flinch mode and could not group at all. I have to relearn every time I have a poor session. Tomorrow is another day to try again and I know...

Progress is a 2 1/2 inch group with a flyer!

I have not benched the gun because the cheek weld sight picture feel is so different from my off hand position I feel it will mess with getting good results. I mostly want consistent grouping from a standing position for the woods walk shoots at the Ancient Ones of Maine. LBL

Progress is a 2 1/2 inch group with a flyer!

I am trying to load as they would have in 1740’s New England so I use borax treated newsprint wads and a .610 round ball over 65 grains of 2f shuetzen. I use an over powder wad a dab of Crisco the ball and a wad rammed as a unit. Loads easily every time and does not require wiping between shots...

Thanks for the pointer on using my phone. I am not the most tech knowledgeable user. LBL

Progress is a 2 1/2 inch group with a flyer!

I was shooting at 25 plus yards with no rear sight. Until I set the post I could hit the target wildly scattering the hits. After the post I could keep them in the black but still scattered and suddenly I realized the trigger pull was way heavy. It was 12 plus pounds when I measured it. It is a...

Progress is a 2 1/2 inch group with a flyer!

I’m not the fastest learner as it has taken me 2 years to finally make a reasonable group with my FDC from an off hand position. I had to incorporate a little assist to enable the deal but ,I think eventually I will be able to practice my way to unassisted grouping. The assistant is heavy...

What is the proper name for "possibles bag"?

I have enjoyed the deluge of discussion about that necessary accessory I carry when enjoying the use of my firelock. It all boils down to time, place and the form of language in use and I will henceforth make every effort to use words that reflect New England in 1745!!~ Keep the history coming. LBL

Crumpled old books sheets for wadding?

I use wasp nest when I can get it. I feel more comfortable about the fire retardant wadding. When I want to conserve my supply I use borax treated news paper to mimic the wasp nest materials. This is what I use for my target shooting and hunting loads. we shoot a lot more frequently than most...

Flintlock vent liners in the 18th century??

Rudyard your comments on the timeline of modern muzzle loading are in line with my thoughts. I don't have any idea of the number of makers from the forty's and fifty's and later, but it shows that American muzzle loading is still cottage based I think. This has driven the introduction of mass...

Flintlock vent liners in the 18th century??

It appears that coned liners were to some degree used in high end guns in Europe and the British Isles during the late 18th century and to a limited extent in guns made in America. The claim the gentleman at the gun show made could be considered correct. But in rare cases in the American...

Flintlock vent liners in the 18th century??

I was aware of relining vents but, I would like to know when the practice of coned vent lining became common. It seems to me it must be a fairly recent innovation.

Flintlock vent liners in the 18th century??

I know vent liners are common on repro guns but when was the practice started? I believe that original guns would have only had eroded vents plugged and redrilled not cones as modern vents are. this question came to mind after a gun show conversation with a fellow displaying several modern...

    Tow replacement?

I use either newspaper soaked in borax and boiling water solution or wasps nest for wadding in my 20ga FDC with good results. They are both fire retardent an I have had no indication of embers burning as I shoot. The solution I use on newspaper is 2 1/2 tablespoons Borax Laundry booster to each...

    Leadballs needed!!!

I make a bullet trap by saving my daily paper and packing them in grain bags and placing two bags in a heavy corrugated box with a wood backer behind my paper loaded bags. The face of the box is the target backer and I can replace the face with a fresh piece of cardboard taped over the shot out...
