To Bounce or not to Bounce

Try different powder charges. Vary up or down by 5 grains of powder. If it is available to you, try a different brand of powder. There are so many variables with these rifles. Experimenting is a part of the fun. Once you find the magical combination of powder, patch and ball, all the trials...

To Bounce or not to Bounce

IMHO, the bounce of the ramrod compacts the powder charge and it tells me that the ball, patch and powder are all firmly connected. I have done this since I first started with muzzle loaders, close to 40 years.

Shooting a flintlock rifle upside down for a score?

During a shooting match, one station on the woods walk we had to shoot at a target with the rifle inverted. Hot summer day, shirt sleeves rolled up. I fired my flintlock and got a rude surprise. Side blast from the touch hole burned my left arm and imbedded powder into my bicep. Not so much fun...

Ignition speed between flint and percussion

Personally speaking, I cannot tell the difference between cap and flint ignition. My flintlocks are just as fast as my caplocks. Thousandths of a second either way feels the same. Paper targets don't care which ignition system that I choose to shoot on any particular day. I have given up hunting...

    Price of flints going up

Mike makes some good chert pieces. They spark really good and last through many hammer falls. BTW, Howdy Mike!

    Green Mountain Barrel Blank?

I have used Green Mountain barrels on two of my Pennsylvania long rifles. IMHO, they are good barrels. I even have some GM barrels on some unmentionable firearms. Bottom line.....GM barrels work.

    Too small balls

Measure all 6 chambers. They may vary in size. Use the largest size chamber to establish the size of the roundball needed.

    Minie Recommendation

What size minie from your Lyman mold? Many people shoot a .580 minie with greased rings and get good accuracy with the right powder charge. A point of reference here. I shoot a sized .575 500 grain minie out of my Enfield, using 44 grains FFFg. I get good hits at 100 yards with this load. You...

    Too small balls

If you have a set of calipers, check each chamber. Or maybe you have a friend who owns calipers? Last resort, a machine shop close to you. Maybe ask if they will measure the chambers for you. They just might do that for free but even if you have to pay, it's still worth it. You will have a...

    Too small balls

That does not sound right. .375 drops into the chamber without any resistance? 100% certain you have a .36 and not a .44? I load .451 roundball into my .44 and it shaves lead from the ball.

Anyone have hearing aid feed back using hearing protection muffs??

I am an RSO. When at the range, I turn the volume down to ZERO on my behind the ear hearing aids and put on a pair of noise cancelling over the ear noise protection made by Peltor. I can be on rifle and pistol firing lines for over four hours at a time.

    Flint Leather, Side Fit

I have several flintlocks from different lock makers. These require different size flints which I buy from Track of the Wolf. Yes, I notch the leather which holds the flint in the hammer jaws. The notch fits around the jaw screw and the flint does not touch the jaw screw in any of my locks...

    Black powder on smokeless ranges

Burning black powder, the smell is much more better than smokeless, IMHO. Being a Range Safety Officer, I am one of a handful of BP shooters. All of the club members know me and accept and are curious about my flintlock rifles (guests mainly). I can't always get the last bench on the right end...

What are your favorite Thompson Center (T/C) Percussion guns?

I only have one T/C Hawken, .45 calibre caplock. It was my starter rifle, the one that lead me to the dark side. Flintlocks.

    Homemade cleaning Patches

For all the married men, another source of patch material, ASK your wife for all old underwear, well washed of course. It will give her an excuse to buy new and you are doing your part by repurposing the knickers into cleaning patches. My S-I-L passed away and there was a drawer full of...
