How many muzzleloaders have you built

I got the bp bug when I bought an original rifle. Wanted to learn about bp, so I bought a kit rifle. Learned how to load and fire the kit rifle and the hook was set. No turning back now. Since then, I have built six rifles and two pistols. All for my personal use. No more building. I am done. No...

How do you string your prize beads?

I use a piece is tanned deer hide to retain my powder horn plug, so I don't lose it while pouring powder. It is a thin strip attached to the strap holding the horn. I have added trade beads to the horn spout plug retaining strap. This is one way to show the beads. Open up your imagination.

    Filling the base?

Too heavy of a powder charge might be destroying the skirt of the minie. I use 44 grs FFFg in my .58 calibre Enfield and I get good results on 50 and 100-yard targets.

    Help with identifying a lock

It looks like a small Siler to me. Without dimensions, it is a guess. Does your friend have a spring vice? It will help when installing the new mainspring. Less chance of breaking the new mainspring.

    Percussion cap shelf life

Like powder, if the caps are kept in a dry place, like a sealed container, it should be good for many years. Moisture will spoil both caps and powder quickly.

    Musket caps stash!

I have never seen Eley caps. I have used RWS in a plastic container (started to say "tin") and Navy Arms caps in tins.

Ball calibers and diameters make no sense.

I own one Pietta and no other bp revolvers. Nothing to compare my pistol with. Two single shot pistols. Many bp rifles and one smoothbore.

Ball calibers and diameters make no sense.

Single shot bp pistols use patched roundball, just like their big brothers (rifles). Something else to ponder. BTW, I use a .451 roundball in my Pietta .44 revolver. I get a nice ring of lead when I force the ball into the chamber.

I have a box of free bee bees

I rolled up some nitrated paper and filled the tube with #7 lead shot. Loaded 60 grs FFg, an over powder wad, a cushion wad then the paper filled shot tube. All this in a Charleville smoothbore. The shot tube acted like a slug at 20 yards. No separation of the shot from the paper.

    Goex Upsetting Dealers

The powder sales at Friendship are not a huge concern. Most of the black powder shooters have never been to Friendship. I have only been there three times in my life. For me, it's a 14 hour road trip, not like it's right around the corner. At least now, the Goex is making its way out to the...

Need some advice on Flinter brass end cap

Not to worry. The ramrod will act as a cover for the two screws. BTW, I have seen that type of screw used in another rifle. The owner wanted brass screws in his Pedersoli southern mountain rifle, so he replaced all of the slotted screws with brass Phillips screws.
