Building a Gun for the Wife

If you build a new rifle for your wife, take some measurements. Length of pull from the butt to the trigger. I know nothing about your wife, but generally, women's arms are shorter than men's. The stock must fit her well. It will increase the enjoyment of the sport. A swamped barrel will help...

Loading with a Steel Range Rod

Use of a muzzle guard with any metal rod is advised while cleaning. There is another option for rods. Brass rods are softer than steel. I do have a brass muzzle guard on my dedicated carbon fiber cleaning rod.

    Standing Up To Be Counted

There is another choice for percussion caps beside Remington and CCI. RWS makes percussion caps in musket and 1075 size. IMHO, RWS caps are a bit hotter and they are a compromise between #10 and #11. Find them if you can. It's good to have options. Just like powder, there are differences.

    Sight possibly

If you are worried about seeing your rifle sights, and you are not worried about being traditional, try this. I put a set of Williams fiber optic sights on a caplock. The red front sight and the green rear sights are easy to see. Take some measurements of sight height, both front and rear...

Poor boy triggers. Single or double?

Jed Clampett had a single trigger on his mountain rifle. He did miss his food shot but stuck crude oil instead.

    Thoughts on Percussion Caps

My thoughts on percussion caps? Yes, I have enough percussion caps to last for the rest of my life. I will let my children decide what to do with any that are left after I pass away.

what size ball to use (exactly)

A friend has a .44 Remington revolver that he shot in N-SSA competition. All of the chambers were mic'ed, finding which was the largest. Once found, all the chambers were bored to the same size. He uses a .454 round ball and has won several matches with that revolver.

    That Evil Ember

While I was a member of the N-SSA, I experienced a "cook-off" while practicing for an upcoming match. Cartridge's preloaded with powder and minie, load and fire while in a timed event. Fired several times, had the next reload in my hand. Pull the minie from the plastic tube and poured the powder...

what size ball to use (exactly)

I use a .451 roundball cast from a Lee mould. I get a nice ring of lead when ramming the ball into the chamber of my Pietta Colt revolver.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Went to the range today. Took the Jaegar with me. I decided to clear out the cobwebs from the barrel and use up the current piece of English flint. I don't know how many hammer falls this flint had but the edge finally failed, even after knapping it several times on the firing line. Even flipped...

Pictures of a patched roundball in flight ...

That does seem to be. The red line is different in each picture, with the second picture having more redlines. Burning powder is lighter than the ball and patch, so it travels faster. That is just my .02 cent opinion.

Welcome to the forum. Black powder is spoken here. My former neighbor was a yooper (upper peninsula), but he has moved on after retiring from USAF as a tanker pilot.

    new guy

Welcome. You are in the right place. Black powder is spoken here. My first bp rifle was a T/C Hawken. I still have it. But many others have since joined brother T/C. It is an addiction that most of us on this forum have been infected by.

    Lead ingots

Those pieces look like old window weights, used to counterbalance old wood frame windows. If so, they are pure lead.

    A List of Beginner's Tools

A good set of screwdrivers would help. Proper fit between driver and slot so there is no slipout, which would scar the screw head. Nothing says poor craftsman more than boogered up screw slots. You will be removing some screws on a regular basis when you start shooting. Like the lock screws. It...
