How you fill your pan makes no difference ...

Priming with FFFg from my one powder horn works best for me. FFFg goes into the barrel and pan. I try to limit the amount of powder in the pan by keeping my finger covering the spout. Sometime the powder flows too fast. Okay if no one is standing to my right side.

    Round ball spin.

I have always wondered.....how do you prevent a roundball from key holing? 🤔:dunno:;)😁

    Inlet black substitute

Ask for a used tube of lipstick from your closest female friend, wife or.... you could use Prussian blue transfer paste. Candle soot works if you don't mind having an open flame close to your work area. I have used all three over the years. Whatever floats your boat.

    Pietta 1851 noobie first impressions

My Pietta is a .44. It has wood grips. I use a load of 15 gr FFFg, a wonder wad and a .451 roundball. I get good accuracy at 15 yards, all day.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I took my bp revolver to the range today. I had powder, balls and caps but didn't get to shoot. Why? My capper was left at home and there was no way to cap the nipples. Fingers too big. Oh well, another day, maybe.

    Barrel help please!!

Take your ramrod and place it inside your barrel. Mark the point where it stops. Then lay the ramrod along the outside of your barrel. If the barrel has an obstruction, you will see the difference. If empty, the rod should reach the breech area. If the rod shows short of the breech, there is an...

    I need tools?

I started with a small set of turnscrew bits from Brownells and expanded the set over the years. Punches? I have bent some that were part of a cheap set. Bought quality ones after that. A good set of dedicated cleaning rods, not wood that can and will break. Plenty of cleaning patches too. This...

Greetings Y'all! Celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the Texas Rangers

A short time ago, I finished reading "Lone Star Justice. The first century of the Texas Rangers", by Robert M. Utley. Very interesting read. Lots of footnotes, very detailed information. If you are interested, I am willing to part with the book. I did spend some time in Texas earlier in my...

    Pre ignition

I can honestly say that I have experienced a "cook-off", that being caused by a hot ember in the breech. I was practicing rapid fire at my R/P club. I fired several shots and started to pour a premeasured FFFg powder charge when the loose powder landed on the ember. I must say it is quite a...

    Polished brass?

Here it comes......If he had the brass polish with him, I am totally sure he would have used it. ;) 😁

    Polished brass?

From the get-go, I never polished the brass parts. I prefer to let the brass age with use. A natural patina is preferred. Besides, shiny brass with a rust browned barrel and furniture? Two contrasting features.

    Flint knapping hammer ?

I use the top end of my forged turnscrew to knap my flints when needed. A few taps on the edge will allow me more shots. That and turning the flint over. Both ways work.

Frizzen (aka hammer) won't open fully when the flint strikes it.

There are a few other things to check. Take the frizzen out of the lock. Check the toe, where it rides on the frizzen spring. It should be smooth and burr free. The frizzen screw should be smooth also. Before you restore the frizzen to it's rightful position, put a small bit of oil on the screw...

N-SSA Spring Shoot ( using Cannon & Mortars ) Fun

Being a former N-SSA member, I have watched the cannon and mortar matches for years. Hearing the brass mortars "ring" increased the enjoyment. One highlight (pun intended) was seeing the cannons fired after dark. The targets were illuminated by road flares and the flash of each cannon as it was...
