    Steel in India-made muskets- MH

I looked those numbers online. "This British mild steel is very similar to the American AISI 1040 mild steel. Refer to AISI 1040 for additional properties". Density, typical carbon steel. It's as clear as mud since I am not real familiar with metals.

Powder charge. How much powder do you use.

For target shooting, I use 50 grains FFFg in my Green Mountain barreled long rifles and my Getz barreled. Jaegar, except for my .50 calibre Colerain barrel. I find that 40 grains FFFg works best. I did kill a deer with 80 grains FFFg. Roundball went completely through the deer.

    CVA .45 kentucky rifle

Give the barrel a good cleaning, then inspect it with a light. Still rough? 0000 steel wool and WD40 is the next step, followed by another good cleaning. Now it's time for a test fire, followed by another good cleaning. You just might be pleasantly surprised with the results.

What happens When You Accidentally Shoot a Ramrod out of your gun?

A friend has sent TWO metal rammers downrange. One was never found and the other one was badly bent, to the point of being unusable.

I wonder when Estes is going to sell BP to the public??

I stocked up on powder last year. Visited Friendship, Ind and Back Creek in Va. I won't need any more for quite a while. Caps too.

    Swamped barrel

Getz barrels come in different sizes. Pecatonica River handles those barrels. I have one on a Jaegar that I built. The balance is great, and it is a good shooter. First shot was a 10x offhand at 50 yards.

    CCI Caps.

CCI #11 caps sometimes will leave some residue on the cone. I have seen it on my cap locks. If you were talking about CCI Reenactor musket caps, they are not as hot as RWS musket caps and could cause misfires.

    Left handed flintlock question

I am right handed and all of my rifles are made to be shot from the right side. I will take the left hand Dixie Southern mountain .50 calibre flintlock rifle which was bought for my wife and shoot it right hand style. The pan flash does not bother me, even though it is right in front of my...

    When do you prime?

Flintlock has the pan primed, frizzen closed, hammer to half **** and a leather hammer stall in place over the frizzen.

    Measuring a Dovetail Cut?

Take measurements of the sight that you want to replace. Most sights are made to a standard size. Casting of the base may alter the size a little bit. If so, remove the rough cast edges with a three sided file. You want a tight fit. Drive out the old sight from left to right. Install the new...

What got you interested in flintlocks?

I started the journey into the m/l world with a T/C Hawken kit. Then I found a small shop that dealt in muzzle loaders. He had a flintlock long rifle hanging on the wall. Seeing that rifle fanned the inspiration flame and then I had to build my own flintlock rifle. BTW, his rifle stock was the...

You got it ALL wrong, son…

Great decision. Start small and learn the how to's about kit building. You just might surprise yourself with the results. I still have my first kit rifle. When I started, no one I knew had any idea of muzzle loaders. No internet. No one to ask for guidance. Just an antique rifle as a model. 40...

    Stupid Question

Antler is softer than metal. The bottom side of my antler is worn smooth in a circular pattern from hitting the muzzles of many rifles.

    Moulding balls

Buy everything once, cry once. I use the cold weather months. I will cast for all of the different calibres whenever I have cabin fever. Do one size ball one day and when I'm bored, do another calibre ball another day. Run the lead pot down and stop casting. Put more lead into the pot and get...

How many barrel wedges are enough for a heavy halfstock barrel?

Use a slotted wedge pin and put a pin through the slot. No lost wedges. The pin will retain the wedge. I did that on my last build of a half stock plains rifle. Two wedges retained by pins.
