Sparks not hitting the center of the pan

Flints are available in different sizes and shapes. Find flints that are more rectangular than square. That will get the leading edge closer to the frizzen and the back touching the jaw screw.

How many barrel wedges are enough for a heavy halfstock barrel?

One barrel lug should be enough. Don't forget the tang screw anchoring the breech end of the barrel.

    Loose shot

In a smoothbore, I wrapped #7 shot in nitrated paper and aimed at a paper target, 15 yards out. Over powder wad and a cushion wad under the shot and a thin overshot card on top. Instead of spreading out like shot usually does, it acted like a slug. One big hole in the paper target, not a spread...

SOLD Nice CVA .45 Flintlock Rifle

Looks very much like the one that I have in my collection. That rifle was a kit which was donated to me. It is a good shooting firearm, IMHO. My heirs will decide what to do with it after I have gone under.

    Black powder

Black powder substitutes do not work well in flintlocks. Higher ignition temperatures are the reason. Black powder works best in flintlocks. It has worked well for over 400 years, give or take a few years. Leave the bp substitutes for the cap guns.

What a hoot it would be...

Oh boy, I know that feeling all too well. Once something bad happens, I will stay away from the project for a week, sometimes two weeks, until my anger has diminished. Then I will return and fix whatever went wrong.

    Shooting into......

My home range once had open land all around. Now, we are surrounded by industrial parks. We have to keep all fired rounds inside our property area, or we run the risk of permanent closure. Already, we have been shut down for police investigations, looking at spent rounds being found. I do...

    Shooting into......

At my home gun range, we did away with wood backstops. We now use small "yard sign" material to hang targets. Plastic gets too many holes, it is easily replaced. Huge dirt berm behind the target boards with ar500 steel on top to catch any errant rounds.

    Finishing nails for barrel pins

There are no hard fast rules in custom rifle building. That's what makes each build unique. Inspiration makes for variety. No cookie cutter rifles or pistols. You and I may disagree with what someone may do, but in the end, it's their build.

    Finishing nails for barrel pins

I used finishing nails on my first longrifle build in 1983. Why? Because no one told me I couldn't use them. Pins are still in place 40 years later. Guessin' that they work.

    Flint lock brand question

Never heard anything about that company.

Been hanging back a bit since joining.

Welcome from NJ. The rifle looks good. You don't need heavy loads. Lighter loads give less recoil and they won't hurt the shoulder. I had my right shoulder repaired and i can shoot for long periods of time with light loads.

    Has your tastes changed.

Variety is what this game is all about. I usually brown my barrels on my builds. I did one with a barrel done with a grey finish. Then again, I have a factory build that has a bright steel finish. It all depends on which way the wind is blowing.

Ramrods for full stocked flintlock rifle

All of my ramrods stay in the thimbles. RR are for show only. I use a dedicated loading/cleaning rod for the range. It is the only place I load and shoot my flinters and caplocks. No hunting anymore.

    Leather for workbench vise jaws?

Small pieces of carpet can be used. Glue the carpet to pieces of wood as wide or wider than your vice jaws. Extend the carpet over the top of the jaws to help protect the wood from damage. Plenty of options here. Your choice.

    Cast or Swaged?

I used a Lee bottom pour lead pot for years, Cast many round ball. Reading a Bevel Brothers article about bottom pour pots and the round ball produced. So, I cut several of my cast round ball in half. Each one had an air pocket inside. It would create a slight unbalance in the ball. I have since...

    CVA Kentucky.45

CVA rifles have a birch wood stock. Birch is a lighter color wood. It will take a dark stain easily.
